Assemblyman Is Censured for Fraternizing With Intern

ALBANY, May 3 — An upstate assemblyman was removed from his post as ranking member of the Assembly Committee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse on Thursday after revelations that he slept at the home of a 21-year-old female intern last month after a night of heavy drinking.

The assemblyman, Mike Cole, a Republican who represents parts of Niagara and Erie Counties, also received a rare letter of censure from his colleagues, citing his violation of a policy banning lawmakers from fraternizing with interns. Mr. Cole will also be stripped of his seniority and prohibited from taking part in the Assembly’s intern program in the future.

The punishment was unanimously recommended by members of the Democratic-controlled Assembly’s bipartisan Ethics and Guidance Committee. A spokeswoman for the Assembly said she could not recall the last time a member was censured for any matter.

In a brief statement issued Thursday evening, Mr. Cole said: “I accept full responsibility for violating the intern fraternization policy that Speaker Silver put into place. I am truly sorry for putting myself, and, more importantly, my family, in this situation. It will never happen again.”

Mr. Cole, 35, is married and has two daughters. He is serving his first full term in the Assembly.<snip>

4. Is there a photo of the 21 year old intern? I'm just curious to see if
...his perceptive capacity was as distorted as hers after all that heavy drinking

17. Snort!
You just can't make this stuff up! The AIDS Czar ordering hookers, and the Alcoholism guy getting drunk and passing out in an intern's apartment.

Ladies and Gents, we are all living in a Carl Hiaasen novel.

18. Crashing at her house...
...as opposed to crashing on the road?

Yes, he could have called a taxi...
All I'm saying is that he at least he didn't make the absolute STUPIDEST decision-
the one that could have killed innocent people or ruined their lives...

2. After a night of heavy drinking it seems all he did was sleep there.
That isn't so bad I think.

9. What was he doing at the home of a 21 year old intern in the first place?
He's married with kids.

12. I have no idea
His intentions were very likely less than honorable. His being at the home of a young woman isn't by itself evidence of sleazy behavior or intentions, though.

However, I was replying to a specific post, not making a general comment.

16. Was he a 'family values' proponent?
If so, then this is all kinds of stupid.

Otherwise, if anyone chooses to crash anywhere rather than drive drunk then they did at least something right. Sounds like he took his lumps, and rightly so... no matter how you cut it, he fucked up.
I always try to give the BOTD; there's a chance he's not lying. (21? cute? I'm drunk? Hell... even I wouldn't trust me.)
But still, despite the culture of Republican lechery, and if he wasn't a 'family values hypocrite', then he didn't do anything worse than what should be hashed out between he and his wife. The loss of pay and position were merely his public pennance. Perhaps his wife is more upset about that.

Drinking w/ your intern and then going to her place and spending the night
does not look real good.

I will admit .... I will come out of the closet an admit that I am a heterosexual
man ( big step ) and when I was out partying with some girls thoughts
of sex and or trying to get sex was almost always on my mind.

For the women the same thing was true .... but in most cases is was how not
to have sex w/ me.

13. Amhersttimes Editor's comment on this-
THE FASTER HE’S REMOVED FROM OFFICE THE BETTER FOR THE PEOPLE OF ALDEN, NY.

When Mike Cole ran against Jeff Bono he was accused having his friends call voters in his district, informing them of negative behavior Mr. Bono was involved in. It was a dirty campaign tactic to say the least.

Mike Cole is a child who will continue to embarrass his family, his family and himself. He never grew out of his immature behavior even though he’s a ‘big boy’ now. This is someone who will continue to abuse his office.

I wrote about Mike Cole, when he ran in his second election, warning the public about his unethical behavior. I’m genuinely sorry the people didn’t pay attention to the truth.
