I like looking up facts. Here is an interesting fact: What did JFK, Hubert Humphrey, and Jimmy Carter (in 1976) have in common? They both won the state of Texas but lost Dallas and Harris Counties which contained the state's two biggest cities. It always seems that the urban areas vote democratic a lot more than rural areas and I was surprised how a candidate can win a state without winning the urban areas, especially nowadays.
Here is an interesting statistic Dallas County 1960 62.2% 48.5% 1964 45.1% 36.5% 1968 50.7% 39.9% 1972 69.5% 66.2% 1976 56.7% 48% 1980 59.2% 55.3% 1984 66.4% 63.6% 1988 58.4% 56% 1992 38.7% 40.6% 1996 46.8% 48.8% 2000 52.6% 59.3% 2004 50.4% 61.1% 2008 41.9% 55.4%
Harris County 1960 51.7% 48.5% 1964 40.3% 36.5% 1968 42.9% 39.9% 1972 62.6% 66.2% 1976 52.2% 48% 1980 57.9% 55.3% 1984 61.5% 63.6% 1988 57% 56% 1992 43.1% 40.6% 1996 49.2% 48.8% 2000 54.3% 59.3% 2004 54.6% 61.1% 2008 48.8% 55.4%
The percentage on the left is the support in the county for the republican candidate for president and the percentage on the right is the support in the state for the republican candidate for president.

4. Not sure about that set of numbers, but county vs city is very different also. |
|
All our major cities in Texas are solidly blue. We get diluted on the county level by the redistricting fiasco. Get outside the county lines and we get screwed by the rural areas, which are conservative.
Yes, with density comes democracy.

:hi:
and I see you've already been introduced to our resident cadre of critics.
They don't mean any harm, they just expect every DU post to conform to their Official Democratic Underground Manual of Style and Usage, which you will receive after you make your 69th post.
A lot of the critics were picked on mercilessly by their professors, or were not breastfed. Or are simply drunk. Please forgive their inhospitality.
I get what you're saying and totally agree. Don't discount the rural voters.
thanks for posting. :)

It can be a buzz saw. Hang in, your idea is an interesting one. Re-think the number thing.
Totally Love "Stairway to Heaven," BTW.
