When I heard this, it made me cry. |
|
I was watching GMA to see what Robin Roberts had to say about the oil spill. She is from Pass Christian, Mississippi, and that area was devastated by Katrina. She is one of my favorite people. She was understandably subdued and upset.
The GMA weatherman was reporting from a boat in the Gulf. It isn't good, and it's going to get a lot worse. They have let the shrimpers work under an emergency declaration in order for them to harvest what they can. There are 400 species in the wetland areas that are threatened, and 40% of our nation's wetlands are in that area.
This was bad enough. Then the weatherman mentioned that 2 dolphins had come up to the boat and followed them for a while. That's when I cried.
the horror, the horror........

1. let's hope some of the leader(s) of our party rethink expanded exploration |
|
it was just a month ago or so where there were several here that defended it because spills only come from barges - not platforms. They are completely safe.

3. it is so horrible I can't even watch |

I haven't heard of any remediation taking place. Are they trying to soak up the oil? Stop it from reaching shore? Or are they just trying to stop the leak?

4. They are using booms to try to |
|
hold it out of the wetlands. They are burning it off in some places. I don't know what else they are doing. The federal government has offered to help, but I don't think they are yet. As far as I'm concerned, it's "all hands on deck" time.
The BP rep said their containment plans would work. MEH!!!
Somebody told Stephenpuss that this wasn't as bad as the Exxon Valdez. He just parroted that line.

5. I usually keep GMA on in the morning as backgroun noise... |
|
and I kind of like Robin.
Not today. I can't even wrap my mind around the environmental devastation. I said to my husband last night: "What good is all the stuff we do as individuals, if these corporations fuck the environment left and right?" He couldn't respond.
Besides, had I seen the dolphins, I might have become murderous. I love them. I wanted dolphins as pets when I was little (before I understood the fallacy of such a thought).

7. New reports coming out: "Biggest ecological disaster in the world" now, they say. |
|
MUCH bigger than Exxon Valdez. MUCH. They keep finding more leaks.
In the 70's, I was living in the Puget Sound area of Wa and was one of many many fierce supporters of NO oil tankers and NO drilling in the waters. Then the Exxon Valdez happened. Everything we had voiced concerned about happened as every promise the oil Companies made was broken.
Now here in Ala. I am watching the nightmare again, only apparently worse. Much much worse.
I hope others will join me today in letting the WH know why offshore drilling in the Gulf is not a good idea......to put it mildly.

8. If those dolphins could talk... |
|
they probably would have said, "What are you assholes doing to our water?" and after that, "Please help us".
I'm about to cry too.

10. The dolphins are the lucky ones. They can swim away from the oil. |

It's the Sea turtles on Dauphin Island that are killing me.
