How much did the tobacco companies know, and when did they know it?

Yesterday my sister and I were talking about the late George Harrison, who died of cancer at age 58. I am just now beginning to really appreciate George, who for years was overshadowed by John & Paul. My sister mentioned that in the Beatles' movies, George was always chewing gum. And of course it's no secret he was a smoker.

If only.

Can anybody point me to a good book about this subject, How much did the tobacco companies know, and when did they know it?
