1. Even an improved economy won't stop the drug wars making the border so dangerous. |
|
Looks like Mexico is incapable of creating a vibrant economy and a credible law enforcement regime. Without that the problems won't stop.

2. Can't have a "Vibrant Economy" with so much corruption |
|
It's a "Rigged Game" enjoyed only by the ruling elite

3. You are absolutely right about that. |

In my opinion, that needs to be a higher priority than immigration reform, because you can't succeed at the latter without getting the former under control. But I think we won't do anything about the border violence until it's too late to keep it from spreading and taking root across the border, especially because I think the only meaningful way to address the violence is to pull the rug out from the profitability of what's causing it, and the only way to do that is to legalize the drugs being fought over.

Reason being, congress does not have the power to change the law as written without ratification from 2/3 of the states. They may pass a bill and look good to the public, but the laws that are already on the books will pass muster.

5. It is a political land mine |
|
There is enough Republicans and Democrats who would be able to come up with a bipartisan solution if there were no politics involved. The problem is that no one wants to face the repercussions of passing reform because it will involve compromises that will piss too many people off on both sides of the aisle.
It is easier for politicians to ignore the hot button issue and pass it off to the next generation.

7. Voted #3, but would have done #3 + #4. |

Republicans think they can score political points with "amnesty" and "just control the border", just like they did with HCR with "Obamacare" and "socialized medicine", and they will with finance reform with "bailout bill" and "interfere with Main Street", but they are losing their touch. Obama has beaten them, will beat them on financial reform and will beat them again on immigration reform because their scare tactics and misrepresentations have been and will be defeated.

8. You forgot: Democrats like the votes, Republicans like the cheap labor. |
|
That's the real reason nothing will happen.
