PET FOOD RECALL EXPANDS - CROSS CONTAMINATION

NEW RECALL: More SmartPak Dry Dog Food Recalled
May 4th, 2007

On May 2, SmartPak recalled all orders of LiveSmart Adult Lamb and Brown Rice. This product tested positive for presence of melamine in a test received on May 2. After their first recall of LiveSmart Weight Management Chicken and Brown Rice, SmartPak sent all of their other dog food for testing, and Adult Lamb and Brown Rice came back with positive results.

SmartPak is saying that this is odd because this particular dog food doesn’t contain any rice protein concentrate, wheat gluten or any of the other ingredients that are on FDA’s import watch list. They are saying it may be cross-contamination.

1. This is exactly why I started making my own dog food a month ago.
I swear, every day or so a NEW food is added to the list, so I don't trust ANY of them!

I have 4 Bichons, and 2 of them are quite old (13 & 17 years) There's no way they would be able to withstand the kidney problems this junk causes.

4. I hadn't heard of that site. Thanks. I found several recipes online
and have been using mainly one of them. It's pretty simple, and I make a big batch to feed all 4 flufferbutts for a week.

Chicken, brown rice, and vegetables.

I buy whatever chicken that has a good sale price, this time it was thighs for .57.lb. They're large ones, so I boil 4 thigs in 6 cups of water for 2 hrs. I remove the chicken pieces and add 1 lb of raw brown rice. I've checked, and there's just the right about of broth from the checken (5 cups) to cook the rice. I also add 1/2 a large bag of frozen mixed vegetables with the rice. Brown rice need to cook for 45 minutes, so I use that time to shred the chicken. When the rice and vegies are done, I add the shredded chicken and stir. When it cools, I separate it into 7 plastic storage bags, put 2 in the refrigerator and the others in the freezer. then every day when I take one out of the refrigerator to serve, I move a frozen one to the refrigerator, and it's thawed by the next day.

Other than the cooking taking quite a bit of time, it really doesn't take me more than 10 minutes of actually doing something. AND the fluffers all LOVE IT!
