New Glenn Beck created wingnut hysteria of the day...
I have a few remaining wingnut friends on facebook (people I have known for more than 20 years, BEFORE they went crazy) and all of them today have posted some variation of the following:

CONGRESS MAKING SECRET BACK DOOR DEAL TO MAKE PUERTO RICO THE 51ST STATE, NOT GOOD!

Beck tied it in with illegal immigration somehow but it is like watching a non-issue become a paranoid delusion in real time!

13. US can suggest but PR has the final say so and they have
voted no numerous numerous times. So they will probably still vote no. And what's beck gonna do then.

7. my point exactly...
this is nothing new, it isn't a secret and it has been part of both parties platforms for fuck all ever! It boggles the mind how he does it, and my friends who are quacking about it are not stupid people, one is an RN and one is a marketing rep for a big aviation firm, they have the same access to, ya know, books and stuff as we do, they could have just done a tiny bit of research and found out it was full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

17. Please forgive me for this
Your friends are educated, it doesn't mean they're not stupid.

They prove their stupidity by listening to anything that Beck has to say, and by not using that access to the research that we know is out there.

Just saying.

3. Dear God No!!!

The lily-white conservative demographic in this country must be in total meltdown mode with this one. The browning of America is not something that sits well with the folks in Mayberry.

4. Beck should seal the deal for Dems this Nov. Everytime he opens
his mouth, another would-be GOP voter wakes up and say, 'that guy is fucking crazy' and then votes for a Dem. Thanks Glenn you are putting Dems in office with your insane politico-drivel. Keep up the good work you loon!

8. How many times does Glenn Beck have to be wrong...
...before his mindless followers get that Beck is nothing but
a raging, ranting, lying lunatic who makes a living by yelling, "Fire!!!!"
in a crowded theater--when there is no fire.

OMG...they all sit around and ruminate about these hilarious things
that never happen. Things that aren't even based in fact. But...oh no!
Don't tell Beck listeners that!! Glenn gives them the inside, inside, inside
scoop that NO ONE ELSE knows...only the smart, politically aware people.

Why....just look at those charts and graphs and that ginormous chalkboard!

Chalkboards don't lie!

9. Beck is cracking up,
Yesterday he was implying that demonic forces were aiding liberals and the Obama administration.

Today he was going on about PR becoming a state, my thought, why not?

I can stand to listen to the man for about ten-fifteen minutes max, because he is entertainment in that horrifying-train-wreck-can't-look-away sort of way, but the man is losing it. A friend of mine actually thinks he's a liberal plant put in place to make conservatives look bad. I wish.

10. If So...Then There's Rushpublicans Involved...
I saw some of the debate this morning. Firstly, of course Dreck is wrong. The bill being debated is to allow Puerto Rico to have a "plebecite" to determine their own status....statehood, independence or status quo (Commonwealth). This has been done before and Commonwealth has always come out on top.

Secondly, a sponsor of this bill was one of the Diaz-Balart brothers from Miami...right wingnut who in favor of the plebecite and allowing the people of Puerto Rico to have "self determination"...his words. Sure doesn't sound like a backroom deal to me. But then, why not spread a little more "brown skinned" fear when you can.

11. It's a bill that would let Puerto Rico hold a 2 part plebiscite. First vote would be to change PR' s
status. Then there would be a separate vote to 1)stay a territory, 2)go for statehood, or 3)become independent.

The last time around was 1998. It was HR 856 and supported by the Republicans, including Tom Delay. Here's a link to the cosponsers of the 1998 bill: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d105:HR00856:@@@P

And here's the roll call vote: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/1998/roll037.xml

19. There should only be 2 choices...
Independence or staehood. It's a choice we should offer ALL out territories who fit the criteria.

15. Someone tell Glenn that Puerto Ricans already come here anytime they want (open borders - gasp).
Obviously, it ever became a state they would get Congressional representation (likely Democratic), so I can see Glenn's political concern. Demographically, however, the "brown invasion" from Puerto Rico has been underway for a little over 100 years and, Glenn, somehow as a nation we have survived.

21. Sweat shops for the garment industry,
Edited on Thu Apr-29-10 02:03 PM by eyewall
since as a State they would receive the same protections for its workers that we currently barely maintain... plus they'd qualify for federal assistance as their economy collapses by moving all their jobs to other third world countries without a minimum wage.

22. Mainly, because it does not want to be...
Some in PR do, most do not. There is not legal, ethical, or other reason why PR would not be welcome into the Union, but the citizens of PR have voted overwhelmingly to stay at the perimeter.

24. No reason at all, except
that whenever the folks in Puerto Rico are asked, or as in 1998 when they vote, as to whether they want independence, to remain a commonwealth or to become a state, remaining a commonwealth has won hands down. Not even the vocal Puerto Rican independence party can make much headway and sway the vote. It's up to them and they seem to prefer commonwealth status rather than statehood or independence.

23. I've never read his reading before
I've seen clips of his show posted here, and read quotes from his radio show.

He is a nut.

One thing that struck me when I read this. Remember how the republicans made the word "liberal" a pejorative? Now he is doing it with "progressive." I had noticed seeing a little more in the signs and stuff about "progressives," and now I know where that is coming from. He is working to turn that term in to a dirty word.
