Just got anonymous hate mail in response to my LTTE! |
|
My letter was published by the New Haven Register on Saturday. The letter arrived in today's mail, unsigned of course. My letter was asking why the tea partiers are demonstrating now; where were they when Bush was running up the deficit, putting two wars and a massive Medicare entitlement on the country's credit card. Why weren't they so concerned about "our children's future" then?
This response just started out calling us "f*cking nuts" and went downhill from there. It was classic RW hate mail. A real high point was his reference to how 911 wouldn't have happened if Clinton "hadn't been so busy sticking cigars in that whore's c***." Then the yadda yadda about "Queer Barnie Frank" and "f*cking crumb Dodd."
This is the second time one of my LTTE's received hate mail. I thought it might not happen this time because it was sent jointly by myself and my husband, instead of just my name. I guess I was wrong...
I'm thinking of writing another LTTE describing as best I can the gist of this hate mail...but I'm not sure they'll publish it. I would hate to give this person any sense of pride, tho, and I would stress what a coward he's got to be, not to own up to his own hate...
This is liberal New Haven folks. At least our lives weren't threatened as other liberal lives have, based on what I read here on DU...

1. Are you sure you want to challenge one of these "people" |
|
to own up to their own hate? You are brave.

3. Give it to the police and inform the paper that you did that. |
|
In fact, write another LTTE and say that law enforcement is looking into it. At the very least, it might give the knuckle-dragger a scare.

12. No it won't scare them. |
|
It'll only give them the rush they're looking for. Same with an internet troll.

4. The paper prints your address? I once wrote a LTTE about abortion and started getting phone |
|
calls because somebody looked up my name in the phone book. Went to an unlisted number for several years until AT&T wanted $$$$$ not to publish it. I'm now listed under an alias.

26. The very same thing happened to me. When Alan Keyes was running for President |
|
Edited on Thu Apr-29-10 04:13 PM by chelsea0011
someone wrote a LTTE about why the Boston Globe wasn't giving him more coverage. I wrote a LTTE responding that Alan Keyes is nothing more than a two issue candiate, abortion and gays, and has no support in the polls, so why should he get more coverage. I never took any postion in my letter about abortion one way or another. So what happens? I start getting unsigned letters in the mail filled with religious quotations and anti-abortion writings. You are right. They look up your address so they can write you letters.

5. Over the past four years I have gotten my share of crazy responses |
|
Edited on Thu Apr-29-10 03:29 PM by rurallib
One idiot got so riled up on the phone after he threatened me and I called him a coward that he told me who he was and where he lived. So I let the police handle it. But I have had numerous calls, several no return address letters (although one clown signed his). I don't know if anyone will ever act. I wonder sometimes, but I don't let it scare me. Fear is the only thing they have. If my kids were still at home, I might act differently. But they are far from here. ETA - I live in very liberal eastern Iowa.

7. I'd advise against that. |
|
Hate mail needs to be treated the same as you would an internet troll. As long as it is not threatening, you should go on and act as if you'd never received it. Their goal is to upset you in any way, so don't let even a breath out that it was sent. It zaps the oxygen right out of that fire instead of adding fuel to the flames.

My sentiments exactly. The nutjob who wrote it probably blew out his anger and frustration in writing the letter, and if he was asked about it, might not even remember it. I'd keep it and never read it again, though, just in case some evidence is needed later and you are unable to testify personally (if you know what I mean).

15. The paper requires that you put your name and town with your letter. |
|
We're listed in the phone book and surely on the Internet. Our name is quite unusual and we're the only ones with it in our area so...

16. New Haven is a small town once you subtract the |
|
Yale students. Since the Register prints the name of your town, if you have an uncommon last name its easy enough to get found.

14. You could always send a follow up ltte |
|
along with a copy of responses you are getting. And then clarify that *THIS* is how teabaggers are....not all the frilly, fluffy and feather articles floating around trying to give the group legitimacy.
Perhpas others should see what kind of people they will be rubbing shoulders with at a tea party rally.

19. Hate mail expresses one opinion but your LTTE was read by |
|
many of the 90k circulation and many more who borrow someone the paper.
Points: 1 hate letter and way over 100k who were affected by your LTTE.
Great job

22. When you write your response call them out on their cowardess. |
|
Tell them if they are so bold to spew the filth that they sent you then they should have the backbone to unveil themselves so all can see. After all you didn't cower behind annonomous.
Further more the person sent it to your home address, you need to contact the police and file a complaint. That way they have it on record if any other threats are given.

The police came over, it was great. Well, maybe not great, but there are nuts out there, and I guess I hit the wrong nerve. Too bad so sad.

If he had any courage, he would've signed it and sent it to the paper.
