BP Will Pay Spill Costs as U.S. Agencies Mobilize (Update3)
What champs. :eyes: Will they pay living wages for those who lose theirs, or replace the wildlife, to name a few things that will result from their carelessness?

BP Will Pay Spill Costs as U.S. Agencies Mobilize (Update3)
April 29, 2010, 2:40 PM EDT

By Julianna Goldman and Roger Runningen

April 29 (Bloomberg) -- BP Plc will bear the costs associated with an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that the Obama administration has declared an event of “national significance.”

“While BP is ultimately responsible for funding the cost of response and cleanup operations, my administration will continue to use every single available resource at our disposal,” President Barack Obama said in remarks at the White House.

The president said he’s ordered the secretaries of interior and homeland security and the head of the Environmental Protection Agency to go to the region to oversee the effort to contain and clean up the spill and “determine it’s cause.”

The leak, caused by an explosion on a drilling rig last week, is spewing about 5,000 barrels of crude oil a day, five times more than previously estimated. U.S. officials said the slick may reach the Gulf Coast as early as tomorrow. The effort to combat the leak and skim crude from the sea is costing BP and its partners in the well $6 million a day.

Deputy Interior Secretary David Hayes said the effort to choke off the leak from a well in 5,000 feet of water may take as long as 90 days.

2. They're not going to pay a dime more than they have to by law
Which is why I support the emerging lawsuits against them. So far I believe one of the wives of the workers killed in the explosion has a suit against them and so do the Louisiana shrimpers.

5. But they aren't going to pay the cost of "lost sales"
of fishing and tourism businesses along the coast. Those businesses are SOL.

6. yea--it took several lawsuits and Exxon STILL has not paid what it agreed to pay for AK spill
getting out of fines and lawful responsibilities is what global international corporations like BP do best.

9. exactly.. the "shareholders" are used to ever-increasing profit
and they need all the money they can get for all those lovely feel-good commercials.

I hope that lady who says we have the "can-do" is right.. and that clean-cut young republican-looking man who tells us we have lots of oil on our shores.. Boy was he ever right :puke:
