International House of Heart Attacks

IHOP stacks up to Double Down competition
by Jen Harper

28 Apr 2010 11:08 AM

Man, I sure could use a cheesecake sandwich right about now. But instead of bread on either side of the cheesecake, I want pancakes. And then I want to top it with strawberry compote and whipped topping. And because that probably won't be enough, let's tack on eggs, hash browns, and bacon on the side. Unfortunately, this is no dream (or grodie nightmare).

Not to be outdone by KFC's disgusting Double Down (that's two fried chicken breasts instead of a bun, with bacon and cheese in between), IHOP's stepped up with its own answer to the question, "How can we keep Americans fat?" Pancake Stackers, a crustless cheesecake sandwiched by pancakes—for a limited time, thank goodness, according to ads.

No word on the calorie count for the new cheesecake-pancake sandwich, but the company's regular Pancake Stackers combo (no cheesecake in between and with all the sides mentioned above) tops out at 1,250 calories, more than double the Double Down, which is 540 calories.

So cheesecake sandwich for breakfast, Double Down for lunch, and what for dinner? Here's one idea: http://www.grist.org/article/2010-04-28-ihop-stacks-up-to-double-down-competition/

17. it's one of the reasons why i could not
ever consider myself a progressive.

i just believe people should have far less interference in their day to day affairs, far more free speech, autonomy etc. than i see advocated by progressives (or conservatives)

5. I'm surprised the Double Down comes in that low in calories
I wonder if that's for the fried breasts vs. the grilled?

Now I can be even more guilt-free when I give one a try.

The blueberry version of those Pancake Stackers might not be too bad for a one-time tryout. But only if I've worked out that day.

Common sense should tell most people to just not eat this kind of stuff very often. When in L.A., I'll chow down on Roscoe's chicken, waffles, fries and a punch drink, but that's because I don't do it unless I'm in town. Not a problem since I don't live there. But when I do, that stuff is the shiznit.

9. It was better back in the day when food tasted good...
and no one paid much attention to what was served. Some groups of people, who seem to die at expected ages like the rest of us, need to mind their own business.

Our ancient ancestors survived by eating anything that couldn't run faster than they could. Short lives perhaps, but merry.

This isn't the sort of breakfast one has every day...and may, for some, be the only meal for the day.

12. Me too...
You don't have to each 12 pounds of the stuff in one sitting... you can pretty much eat whatever you like and remain healthy, as long as you think in terms of portions.

Who could resist a little of this scrumptious stuff? And unless you have serious medical issues, who needs to?

16. If I ever feel the need to off myself
I'll eat at KFC and IHOP daily.

Interesting how those two companies are easily identified by their acronyms. "DOA" is another easily identified acronym.
