Insanely stupid sign outside a hospital today
Older woman with a hand stenciled sign reading "Breast Cancer Linked to Abortion" standing on the curb outside of Pennsylvania Hospital at 8th & Spruce streets today.

Mrs GoS says, "Don't go over there. Don't say anything."

I couldn't restrain myself - in my best projected stage voice from across the street: "You are wrong you stupid piece of shit. There is no science to prove that. You are a liar."

She just stared as we walked away. I did get some looks from people on the corner. Most were puzzled because they couldn't see her sign.

I feel that if these idiots aren't confronted, then they'll just keep doing this shit.

We have to confront these people whenever and wherever we can.

It's a mistake to get into a shouting match. If they start to screech, walk away. Just tell them they're filthy liars, just like you did, and leave.

You get the gold star for citizenship today, Mister.

let her sputter and try to explain then ream her out.

Good job, keep confronting them.

10.  i applaud you for using speech to counter speech
i don't applaud you for calling somebody you never met, who is obviously misinformed, a "stupid piece of shit" and a "liar"

you have every right to do so, but it diminishes your argument, in the public debate

18. Thank you.
For someone to stand outside of a hospital where cancer is treated or anywhere at all, with a sign like that is just beyond stupid and heartless.

12. Wasn't there a study a few years ago
that actually DID show a link between abortion and breast cancer? I'm going to do some looking, but I'm almost sure there was.

13. There was a report about that and, AIR, it was thoroughly discredited.

15. The link on the top of the Google heap
had this quote

"In 1986, government scientists wrote a letter to the British journal Lancet and acknowledged that abortion is a cause of breast cancer. They wrote, "Induced abortion before first term pregnancy increases the risk of breast cancer." (Lancet, 2/22/86, p. 436)"

But the other links seem to refute it.

17. From the National Cancer Institute Link
Background

The relationship between induced and spontaneous abortion and breast cancer risk has been the subject of extensive research beginning in the late 1950s. Until the mid-1990s, the evidence was inconsistent. Findings from some studies suggested there was no increase in risk of breast cancer among women who had had an abortion, while findings from other studies suggested there was an increased risk. Most of these studies, however, were flawed in a number of ways that can lead to unreliable results. Only a small number of women were included in many of these studies, and for most, the data were collected only after breast cancer had been diagnosed, and women’s histories of miscarriage and abortion were based on their “self-report” rather than on their medical records. Since then, better-designed studies have been conducted. These newer studies examined large numbers of women, collected data before breast cancer was found, and gathered medical history information from medical records rather than simply from self-reports, thereby generating more reliable findings. The newer studies consistently showed no association between induced and spontaneous abortions and breast cancer risk.

Of course, the facts have never stopped RW propaganda. They just keep trotting out their erroneous data and pushing it as fact.

14. I think it's the other way around.
With a slight increased risk for breast cancer in women who take their pregnancy to full term.

16. I just did a real quickie look
one of the links said there was an increased risk immediately after a full-term pregnancy, but apparently the risk does go down again after that.

that said: "A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government."

I yelled 'traitor!' at the driver as we sped down a busy street. He never heard me but I felt better. I just wished I'd had a magic marker to change the word patriot to traitor.

20. Good for you. Some people actually do believe anything, especially if
they can find blame in it...I recall people believing that birth defects were caused by the mother's enjoying sex (I guess it is only OK for dad...)

25. Confrontation never cured idiocy, unfortunately.
Reee-lijun is often a stronger and more addictive drug than cocaine.

Faux News is like a tele-church to many. A daily dosage of Democratic and "have-too-little" hatred can be damaging to one's heart over time.

Wish science could prove that . . . ;)

27. I am wondering what in the hell is going on in this country. The religious fruitcakes are taking
over the village. The more we all sit back in silence they more we are in danger. I don't know what to do and were we all need to turn. Someone on the left needs to start pushing back peacefully and not look like the teabaggers who are full of hate. Surely there are young people with intelligence out there. Come on young people don't let these teabaggers run your life or your future will be in trouble.

28. Like that you confronted her but don't agree with calling her a piece of shit.
I just can't see where it would help. That kind of thing will just make her feel self-righteous because you are the "bad" enemy and further entrench her beliefs, and the bystanders were likely made uncomfortable, even those that might agree with your pov. Disagreeing, actively countering her in some way, sure, but I think you chalked one up for her side.

29. When I go by people carrying signs like this, I like to yell "So how many babies have you adopted?"
I always get a funny look from these hypocrites, but it makes me feel better than saying nothing.
