"Drill. Baby. Drill!" Bill Maher Today: "Every Asshole Who Ever Chanted..."
Edited on Thu Apr-29-10 06:24 PM by Hissyspit
BILL MAHER TODAY VIA TWITTER:

"Every asshole who ever chanted 'Drill Baby Drill' should have to report to the Gulf Coast today for cleanup duty."

INCLUDED IN THE ROLL CALL:

  • “So, do you want to put your country first?,” asked former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele. “Then let’s reduce our dependency on foreign sources of oil and promote oil and gas production at home. In other words: Drill, baby, drill! And drill now!,” he said.

  • Egged-on by delegates on the floor of the Xcel Center Rudy Giuliani said, “Drill, baby, drill,” a little tentatively at first, which was then followed by a more robust “Drill, baby, drill.”

  • Senators who once were tempted to expand offshore drilling are raising alarms instead about a destroyed well that is spewing a thousand barrels of oil a day into the Gulf of Mexico. “The continued failure to stop the leak threatens to wreak untold damage on Florida’s coastlines,” Florida Senator George LeMieux warned this week. “The federal government needs to make this their immediate, number-one priority...” Just a few weeks ago, LeMieux was talking hopefully about the revenue potential of allowing expanded drilling closer to the shores of Florida. His Republican colleague Richard Shelby has long favored offshore drilling if it brings revenue to his state of Alabama.

  • ...Political figures like former Speaker Newt Gingrich and Senator John McCain (R-AZ) chanted the popular cry: “Drill Here, Drill Now!”

  • Said Sarah Palin: "That’s why we must develop our own domestic supplies of oil and gas. Though the chant of 'Drill, baby, drill' was much derided, it expressed the need to confront this issue head-on before it reaches a crisis point."

Yet no one seems to realize that suicidal tendencies are a sickness. It's really sick what we're doing... even more sick are the greedy bastards who push for more domestic drilling.

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/4/30/862077/-DRILL-BABY-DRILL-Bill-Maher-Today:-Every-Asshole-Who-Ever-Chanted...

EXPLANATION AT THE TIME OF WHY "DRILL BABY DRILL" WOULD WORK BETTER AS A PALIN PORNO THAN AS A NATIONAL ENERGY POLICY:

"Since 1949 the overall pattern has been this: the harder we look for oil and the more we drill, the harder it gets to find ... The facts clearly show that people who believe that by simply ramping up drilling we will substantially improve our diminishing domestic oil production, well, these people—to use an expression not uncommon in oil country—are very much pissing in the wind..."

WARNING AT THE TIME OF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:

"Environmentally speaking, the possible effects of offshore drilling range from dangerous to disastrous. Proponents of drilling cite new technology that has minimized spills from hurricanes. However, 2005’s hurricanes Katrina and Rita caused spills of at least seven million gallons of oil, a huge number even in comparison to the 11 million gallons spilled by the oft-cited 1989 Exxon-Valdez environmental disaster. In November of 2005, an oil tanker spilled an estimated one to three million gallons of oil when it hit a sunken platform in the Gulf that had drifted out of place. The affects on global warming are also numerous as each oil platform produces 214,000 pounds of air pollutants each year."

    LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Gulf Oil Spill Could Eclipse Exxon Valdez

Massive Spill Far Worse Than Initially Thought

    CAIN BURDEAU, Associated Press Writers
    UPDATED: 7:29 pm CDT April 29, 2010

VENICE, La. - An oil spill that threatened to eclipse even the Exxon Valdez disaster spread out of control and drifted inexorably toward the Gulf Coast on Thursday as fishermen rushed to scoop up shrimp and crews spread floating barriers around marshes.

Oil Slick Just a Few Miles from Louisiana Coast

Ten wildlife refuges in Mississippi and Louisiana are in the oil's likely path, with the Pass-a-Loutre Wildlife Management Area at the tip of the Mississippi River likely to be the first affected, Jindal announced. Wildlife conservation groups said Thursday the oil could be a disaster for coastal areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. (FishOutofWater's Diary)

Originally estimated at 1,000 barrels (42,000 gallons) per day, now 5,000 barrels (210,000 gallons) of oil per day.

Edited on Fri Apr-30-10 01:53 PM by defendandprotect
our capitalistic destruction of nature --

Much of the Ozone layer has close to 50% damage, other than the actual holes -- !!

We've already had tremendous changes in temperature -- 25 degrees above normal here in NJ --

And we are suffering steadily increasing chaotic weather across the planet -- which will

increase. There's a 50 year delay in Global Warming which means we are only feeling the

effects of our activities up to 1960. And no one knows how all of this may compound.

Especially with the latest disaster from BP/Gulf oil spill!

Glacier melting seems also to be increasing plate shifting -- causing more earthquakes

When you HEAT up the atmosphere, you get chaos.

Again, no one can guarantee that the planet will continue turning --

and there is always the possibility of a pole shift.

THIS is capitalism -- and its suicidal!

PS: Every day more and more of nature and its beauty is destroyed --

as patriarchy/capitalism build a world which reflects its own inner ugliness/sickness/violence.

someone here supplied some info on that only about a week ago --

if you know how to use archives -- good luck!

However, the original Pentagon memo to Bush included increasing EARTHQUAKES in their

rendition of how much more dangerous Global Warming was to us vs "terrorism."

Granted, I don't think at the moment there is hard evidence that that we have as yet

passed any average number of earthquakes.

But, the Pentagon believed this would happen -- among other chaotic weather conditions

and increasing chaotic conditions -- and the info someone else supplied suggested that

Glacier melting would cause plate shifting.

Keep in mind the Pentagon memo has been scrubbed of that detail - - and I don't have the original.

Edited on Fri Apr-30-10 01:38 PM by Hissyspit

New drilling on hold as Gulf spill oil washes up

By CAIN BURDEAU, Associated Press Writer – 53 mins ago

The National Weather Service predicted winds, high tides and waves through Sunday that could push oil deep into the inlets, ponds and lakes that line the boot of southeastern Louisiana. Seas of 6 to 7 feet were pushing tides several feet above normal toward the coast, compounded by thunderstorms expected in the area Friday.

First oiled bird found, cleaned up

No burning or skimming oil for now due to winds, high seas

NBC News and news services updated 31 minutes ago

FORT JACKSON, La. - Oil from a massive leak in the Gulf of Mexico was starting to ooze ashore in the southeastern U.S. on Friday, as crews cleaned up the first bird found coated with oil. The wide leak threatens wildlife along fragile islands and barrier marshes and puts one of the world's richest seafood grounds in peril.

Workers with Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research, which is based in Delaware, used Dawn blue dishwashing soap to scrub the oil off the young Northern Gannet. The detergent is commonly used to clean animals. Dr. Erica Miller, with Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research, gave Pepto-Bismol to a Northern Gannet on Friday in Fort Jackson, La. The bird, normally white when fully grown, was covered in oil from the rig leak. Pepto-Bismol was used because the bird probably also ingested oil.

The rescue center says the bird was found offshore, not on the shoreline.

voting for those who abandoned CAFE standards, or who voted for those weakening environmental enforcement, or those defeating exploration of new technologies are also culpable.

we all use fossil fuel based products. In our ever self denying pursue of more oil for our grossly over indulgent lifestyle, we seem to only complain AFTER a spill. As if oil only exists in the abstract prior.

we type our screeds, our words of wisdom and our indignation on a machine produced via fossil fuels.

We eat, live and drive because of fossil fuels.

The amusing hypocrisy of complaining while we motor to work, eat our factory farmed food, wear our fossil fuel produced clothes and breath our fossil fuel polluted air.

yet, we get bent out of shape when one oil platform gets a leak, rather then get pissed off and angry at the daily pumping of fossil fuels into our system.

There are spills every freaking day, but they don't get reported. There are spills in the middle east, in Nigeria, in China, in Canada, but yet, we get pissed off over this one because it's right in our face. In an area that is basically a dead zone due to fertilizer run off. But no one complains about that.

We choose to willingly live in disconnect. I recall something my mom would say to me when I was a kid, that would really piss me off, "what? you want to save the world?" Yes, actually, I do. But I can't do it alone.

Stop being gluttons. Stop driving when you can walk. Eat less junk food, bicycle more. Reduce your footprint.

We all can rant and rave all we want about this spill, but our life style is what made this happen.

If you don't demand something, there will be no need for it.

    It's really that simple.

But alas, it's easier to expunge ones hate, frustration and powerlessness on the internet that it is actually doing something about it.

    Meh, I'm no better.

I was initially thinking of piling on the bandwagon to deride the drill baby drill mantra like some hysterical fool...but then I realized that I drove my car to work this morning.

So I think I'll just sit down and shut up.

But this really is terrible and has me thinking twice about my commuting options.

    118. Driving your car to work and chanting braindead slogans are not the same thing.
There are degrees of involvement here. Some people work for alternate energy sources and some people work against them. Some people work to educate others on the need and possibilities for shifting from oil consumption and some people muddy the dialogue deliberately. Almost all of these people have to drive a car.

    10. Stop the Insanity...
Doesn't everyone understand that we all are slaves, slaves to oil, no gas for your car no transportation to work, no oil no heat, no production, ask yourself a simple question when gas goes up by a dollar a gallon how painful is that for you? My family has to give up things, vacations, deserts, movie night, cable... and on and on...What happens to that top 1 percent that we always hear about? NOTHING, it means absolutely nothing to them. If Oil was distributed based on your income and you were charge on a curve so that it hurt your damned right people that could, would, fix this problem.

People need to get a grip and solve the problem from the consumer level. Screw the Oil industry, if you make the need for oil obsolete we solve a multitude of problems.

I thought Obama would have truly gotten serious about addressing this problem but we just keep on driving ourselves toward the cliff so much for the Change we can believe in.

I'm in NC. And they want to drill off the Outer Banks???? The Gulf is relatively calm compared to the friggin' "Graveyard of the Atlantic" (from Wikipedia: More than 1,000 ships have sunk in these waters since records began in 1526.)... where the Gulf Stream would probably carry an oil slick right up to DC and New England.

At that time there was a Congress filled with Democrats who were born, bred and weaned on the New Deal and who could muster a veto override...

And Nixon himself, when it came to clean air and water and food safety was also born and bred on the New Deal and still believed that government had a right to protect "We the People" from SOME of the most egregious forms of corporate greed...

But that's all gone, not just in the far-right bat-crap crazy republican party but most of the Dems don't have a clue about community -- just their corporate masters' needs.

Yeah, overturning the ban on offshore drilling doesn't have the same ring as "Drill, baby, drill!" but the ugly results tend to be the same.

    88. You know, I am getting mighty fedup --
with the "It's OK when he does it" shit I read on a daily basis here. I feel like I stepped down some, sick, fucked up rabbit hole when that happens.

I have been coming here for 8+ years to get the TRUTH.

Not spin, not propaganda, not partisan excuses, but the TRUTH.

I hated it when the GOPer sheep excused W's bullshit and I am doubly hating it when I see Dems doing it for O.

Thank you for "getting" my point.

    82. He Has a Point
Bill Maher does have a point. Since these people were so in favor of drilling they should be willing to go to the Gulf and help in the cleanup. My only question is could anyone, if they wanted to, go to the area and try to help?

    99. NATIONALIZE the oil industry . . . it was a good idea in 1960 . . .
it was a good idea before that -- and it's still a good idea.

The Democratic Platform JFK ran on in 1960 called for the nationalizing of oil.

FDR wanted to nationalize oil and sought advice from LBJ who wasn't for it.

Long and damaging road from those times to these!!

And, what if the oil is actually the earth's ballast -- ?

    102. Sarah Palin would make a good conservative Secretary of the Interior...
Look at Reagan's Secretary of the Interior James Watt? Between Reagan thinking trees caused pollution and James Watt wanting to turn our country into one big desert, Palin would be a conservative dream-come-true to oversee our nation's environment.

How stupid does a person have to be to qualify as a conservative?

    115. He threw them a bone because he knew it wouldn't happen
the LAST thing oil companies want to do is change the current situation. They have control of the final tap (for most oil) and they like it just the way it is. Does any of us really think that they want to sink (sorry) that much into capital? Does anyone think that if there was an expansion WE wouldn't pay for it?

The nuclear idea is actually a good one. Thankfully there was a halt on construction until we got to better reactors. But the oil drilling is never going to fly and he knows it.

    106. This could become the worst man-made environmental disaster EVER
They are no closer to closing this well as they were the moment the oil rig collapsed.

I'm so angry right now that so many Americans are resistant to making just a handful of sacrifices to reduce our collective dependence on oil. It will be the undoing of the planet.

Of course, BP, Halliburton (serioulsy? Is this the most evil company on the planet?), and every other company involved with this will get off scott free.

IMHO, this is criminal negligence and the leadership of all companies involved should rot behind bars.

Edited on Fri Apr-30-10 05:54 PM by GreenTea
fuck the environment, fuck the workers, safety & oversight. To republicans corporations profits are far more important that anything else and safety precautions would cost corporations money, safety precautions cost corporations money....they want all the profit but will never accept any responsibility....Fuck the environment, fuck workers & safety...and fuck foresight...it would cost the corporations a tiny fraction of their profits, yet the republican will have none of that.
