Woman bites man, after being called fat
Edited on Fri Apr-30-10 12:09 AM by npk
A man is missing a piece of his ear after he insults a woman, calls her fat.
A Lincoln woman is accused of biting off part of a man's ear who insulted her, police say.
Anna Mae Godfrey, 21, 1101 D St., was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault after an incident outside a house party on the 7400 block of Greenwood Street, said Lincoln Police Officer Katie Flood.

Flood said three men in their twenties at the party were arguing with the rest of the partygoers as they left around 3 a.m. Then, Flood said, one of the men shouted an insult at Godfrey.
Godfrey allegedly ran half a block, tackled the man and bit off a chunk of his right ear.
Flood said the missing piece of the man's ear was not found, and he would likely require plastic surgery.

Flood said officers later learned that the injured man and two others had been arguing with other people at the birthday party. Flood says the man told 21-year-old Anna Godfrey that she was fat.

18. I want to be sure I have this right.
Someone calls another a name, and the anger aroused by that namecalling justifies maiming the original person.

I really want to be crystal on this one, because that's what you seem to be saying. If I have this wrong, then I'll stand corrected.

24. So, and I just want to be sure I'm reading this right...
It's okay to physically maim someone for calling another an unkind name. Physical violence over words is now what's acceptable?

I really want to be sure. Because the next time someone here calls me a name, "gives insult" I want to be able to punch his/her? fucking teeth down their throats and say "The Magistrate said it was okay" so I'd be justified.

Then, oh yeah, I could call it "Funny As Hell" too.

You, sir, have fucking lost it.

Man calls a woman fat, he's an asshole. He's in a position to be ignored and disliked by said female. He's not set up to be maimed.

And yeah, this comes from someone with a Punisher avatar.

Looking forward to your response...

34. My interpretation of those posts would be "sure, mutilate people whenever you like."

Because of the issues with HIV and Hep I don't think it's a good idea to bite peoples' body parts off, but why not carry a knife around and the next time someone smart mouths you at a gas station or the walmart just slice off their noses, or ears or eyelids. Some of those lunch ladies at Macy's get pretty annoying too.

The comments concerning prison rape, violence against men in general, and especially the trashy, slobbering drunk female kind against men are usually pretty disgusting around here. I would take it with a grain of salt and not bother.

104. ....
It was April the Forty-first, being a quadruple leap year;
I was driving in downtown Atlantis.
My Barracuda was in the shop, so I was in a rented Stingray,
and it was overheating.
So I pulled into a Shell station; they said I'd blown a seal.
I said, "Fix the damn thing and leave my private life out of it, okay, pal?"

While they were doing that, I walked over to a place called the Oyster Bar.
A real dive. But I knew the owner; he used to play for the dolphins.
I said, "HI GILL!" (You have to yell, he's hard of herring.)

Chorus:
Think I had a wet dream, cruisin' through the Gulf stream.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh. Wet dream.

Gill was also down on his luck.
Fact is, he was barely keeping his head below water.
I bellied up to the sandbar; he poured the usual: Rusty Snail, hold the grunion, shaken, not stirred.
With a peanut butter and jellyfish sandwich on the side, heavy on the mako.
I slipped him a fin, on porpoise.
I was feeling good; I even dropped a sand dollar in the box for Jerry's Squids,
for the halibut.

Well, the place was crowded. We were packed in like sardines.
They were all there to listen to the big band sounds of Tommy Dorsal.
What sole. Tommy was rockin' the place with a very popular tuna,
"Salmonchanted Evening", and the stage was surrounded by screaming groupers,
Probably there to see the bass player.
One of them was this cute little yellowtail, and she was givin' me the eye.
So I figured this was my chance for a little fun.
You know, piece of Pisces.

But she said things I just couldn't fathom.
She was too deep, seemed to be under a lot of pressure.
Boy, could she drink. She drank like a...
She drank a lot.
I said, "What's your sign?"
She said, "Aquarium."
I said, "Great! Let's get tanked!"

Chorus

I invited her up to my place for a little midnight bait.
I said, "C'mon baby, it'll only take a few minnows."
She threw me that same old line: "Not tonight, I got a haddock."

And she wasn't kidding, either, cause in came the biggest,
meanest looking haddock I'd ever seen come down the pike.
He was covered with mussels. He came over to me; he said, "Listen, Shrimp.
Don't you come trollin' around here." What a crab.
This guy was steamed. I could see the anchor in his eyes.

I turned to him and I said, "Abalone! You're just being shellfish."
Well, I knew there was going to be trouble, and so did Gill,
cause he was already on the phone to the cods.
The haddock hits me with a sucker punch. I catch him with a left hook.
He eels over. It was a fluke, but there he was, lying on the deck,
flat as a mackerel, kelpless.

I said, "Forget the cods, Gill. This guy's going to need a sturgeon.
Well, the yellowtail was impressed with the way I landed her boyfriend.
She came over to me; she said, "Hey, big boy, you're really a game fish.
What's your name?"
I said, "Marlin."

Chorus

Well, from then on we had a whale of a time. I took her to dinner;
I took her to dance; I bought her a bouquet of flounders.
And then I went home with her.
And what did I get for my trouble? A case of the clams.

True. And psychological and emotional abuse can often cause damage that cannot be healed by any means. Not that I agree with physical violence for any reason other than self defense, but verbal abuse seems to be almost celebrated these days.

I can't stand bullies, which the ear guy clearly is.

I can imagine his comment was one that broke the camel's back for this woman - not that it makes her behavior acceptable, just a bit more understandable.

109. I've been insulted and bitten plenty of times.
When I was in middle school, I was defending a kid who was being picked on by a bully and that bully bit me in the arm and gave me two puncture wounds that are very visible to this day. That was one of the far too many times I was bitten. The insults I was given as a kid mean nothing to me now, I've still got scars from the bites. I would say that someone who bites another person without being physically provoked is a bully and an idiot. This woman was an adult. Adults should know that words are only words and if she wanted to be protected from words, she needs to hang out with different people. People in my office gossip all the time, it really irks me that adults still engage in that kind of behavior. What do I do? I don't participate in it. Simple as that.

or just lucky. I was physically abused from the day I was born until I went into foster care. But it is some of the psychological and emotional abuse that hurt me the worst, and bothers me to this day.

Like physical abuse, psychological abuse varies in severity. The emotional stuff can be worse than the physical for some people. But little is done to even acknowledge the trauma of it. Both are harmful and ugly and should be treated as such.

125. I understand how words can hurt adolescents.
And it sucked being verbally abused as a child. However, as I matured, words slowly lost their ability to hurt me. As an adult, there is NOTHING a person could say to me that would provoke me to violence. And the words that still do hurt me come from friends or family, I couldn't give a rat's ass what some drunken idiot at a party has to say to me. If another adult tried to insult me, I'd laugh that he/she matured so little over the course of their life that they think that insulting someone would make them feel better. However, if someone tried to physically harm me, all bets are off. Both parties involved should be rather embarrassed.

But I stand by what I say in that there is NOTHING that another person can merely say to me that would move me to violence. Words can only hurt you if you let them. Fists and teeth hurt you whether you let them or not.

"Words can only hurt you if you let them."

Nice psycho babble - complete bullshit. You are sounding more and more like a "blame the victim" type. How can you possibly know what hurts another person and why? What may be the case for you is hardly the case for everyone. I have been treated pretty badly without becoming violent, but I can't say it will never happen. I hope it never does. I don't think it ever will. But the possibility probably exists in all of us under the right (or wrong) circumstances.

You may call it psycho babble, but I call it common sense. Funny that we'd tell our children these things and seem to forget it as soon as we're grown up. If you're willing to let some idiot's words drive you to violence, you really haven't matured very much since being a child. I'd very much liken that to Limbaugh's ignorant followers who are driven to violence any time he says something to really upset them. It's really quite easy to ignore someone's words. Ignoring someone's violence directed towards you is not so easy at all.

If you insult someone, you should expect-- or at least be prepared for-- a response. The fact that this man insulted someone he apparently assumed could not respond physically, and got part of his ear bitten off as a result, is pretty funny. Not Patton Oswalt funny, but it's got some humor to it.

123. Men don't get as upset over being called fat
And they are dominant. Here the attacker comes from the oppressed group, traditionally.

Like the way black comedians can get away with making fun of white people but the opposite would not be tolerated.

And no one is really finding it funny, just a knee-jerk thing - the story has a barroom brawl quality and nobody died, so if you don't know them personally, it's going to seem a little funny, but you can see that humor without condoning the actual act.

Woman bites part of man's ear off: Hah, hah! Isn't that hilarious!

...than I am by the double standard the response indicates, because you know people would catch hell for laughing it up over the gender reversed situation.

A woman does this, and it's symbolic of that one woman standing up for herself.

A man does something like this, and it's taken as a symbol of all men abusing and repressing all women.

Yeah, you get all high and mighty about how someone calling someone a name doesn't justify biting the guy's ear, but what you really seem to be saying is that, well, why'd she go all Mike Tyson on him--doesn't she know that if you're fat, people are going to ridicule you in public, and your only option is to walk silently away?

Women don't exist just to be subjects for the "male gaze." She's a person with feelings who should be able to move through life without enduring verbal comments on her appearance. Would you approve of that same man calling someone in a wheelchair a "cripple"? After all, it's true, isn't it?

Her reaction was unaccptable, but speaking as someone who's had strangers comment negatively on my appearance (I was actually barked at once by some asshole on a motocycle) I do get where she's coming from.

People have a fundamental right to say what's on their minds, even if doing so is socially inappropriate or rude or tasteless.

Nothing in the article says he judged her.

Would you approve of that same man calling someone in a wheelchair a "cripple"? After all, it's true, isn't it?

It's not my place or yours to approve of what other people say. We can have opinions, and we have the right to state them.

I think he was an ass to call her fat, and he'd be an ass in your hypothetical, but I would support his right to say those things.

I have never posted that word on DU or anywhere else. The only reason my reply contained it was that I was quoting Love Bug's hypothetical question that was directed specifically to me. It appears in this reply because YOU posted it.

I have never and would never use that word in a negative way to describe a person.

...some assholes need a punch to the face before they will learn.

The only lesson that ever gets taught by a punch in the face is the violent nature of the person who delivers it.

but that won't stop us from writing treatises based on the barest details from initial police reports that may be hopelessly wrong about whatever it is that happened.

!!!

Nevertheless, at a distance, and probably only at a distance, it's hard not to grin at the thought that this woman sent a message to all the real pigs, the ones who treat fat people and especially fat girls (or often enough thin girls judged fat) as fair game for abuse.

I've been called fat (and it was not meant as an observation of truth, but as an insult) fatso, "queen-size" - by complete strangers simply because I existed in the same time-space with them. It really isn't frowned upon to be a creep to fat people in our society. And then some people are just creeps, period.

wrong to physically maim someone who has merely insulted you. I want that to be clear to everyone who reads the rest of this post, so don't waste your time asking me if I approve of her ear removal actions. I do not.

Having said that, I am glad she kicked his ass. Mr. Macho Man assumed he had little to fear from insulting 'the fat chick' but I guess he learned differently. Maybe we should just stop with the insults, stop picking on people we perceive to be weaker than we are, and stop assuming that those who are continuously belittled will not someday lash back.

58. You're really projecting and inventing your own story here.

You have absolutely no idea what the argument was about or whether the dude even addressed her before the alleged "insult." You have no idea if she belligerently started the whole thing in the first place, or even if she went around yelling that the three who left all had needle dicks or were shit lays. Why you're assuming that a woman who would chase a guy half a block to bite his ear off is in any way "weak" or fawn-like in her sensibilities is beyond me. That's what's so funny about these threads. No one has a clue what went on, but interject their own sensitivities into the story so it makes sense to them.

These are the same people that abhor violence. People get called fat everyday. Is it right? No. Does that mean you have the right to beat them up or bite them? No. Two wrongs don't make a right. People need to grow up. The double standards here are disgusting.

76. I am trying to analyze why this is funny. It shouldn't be, but it is.
Edited on Fri Apr-30-10 10:23 AM by mainer
I fully understand why guys might be offended that we think a woman biting a man is funny, but a man biting a woman is just plain mean.

Maybe there are some humor analysts here who can explain it to us. Does it have to do with the fact it turns the usual on its head (e.g., man bites dog)? Is it because fat women are funny, but fat men aren't? Is it because women aren't supposed to react this way, and when they do, we're startled -- which makes it funny? Why is this story probably going to be the subject of late-night jokes? (And I don't doubt that Jon Stewart or Dave Letterman will be using this)

Why was the Lorena Bobbitt story funny, but a guy mutilating a woman an outrage? It's an interesting conundrum. (and lest you think I'm the only one who thought the Bobbitt story was funny, there were a lot of comedians who agreed with me.)

97. It's funny because
it is dude vs. chick and dude lost. Men are "stronger, tougher" than women, which makes chicks the underdog, and most people side with the underdog. They don't usually win.
That is why a man who beats a woman should have his ass kicked and why a man who gets beaten by a woman is laughed at.

This chick IS fat and needs to accept it or stop being lazy and lose it.
The dude needs to learn to shutup or back it up.

106. I think it's perceived as funny because it's so unexpected.
People are insulted all the time and generally nothing happens about it. I'm sure the guy who was bitten assumed nothing would happen to him either. However, to have a woman run a fair distance, then bite part of his ear off is about as unexpected as it gets. It's just an incredibly non-proportional response, kind of like getting kicked in the nuts after beating someone at Stratego. As for Lorena Bobbitt, I never once thought that whole ordeal was funny. I was pretty mortified that she got off (so to speak) as she did.

141. Why it's funny...
Edited on Fri Apr-30-10 05:06 PM by JackRiddler
- We don't know the details. Just what's in that article. Vagueness encourages projection and fictionalization. We totally get to "see what we want to see."

- What we think about it does not matter.

- An ass who lacks manners and acts cruelly gets a permanent comeuppance that nonetheless is not a serious maiming - depending on how much of the ear was lost, of course.

- The default image that will occur to most people is of a fat person, a girl no less, beating up on a big male bully. (That the actual physical power ratio between the biter and the bitee may be very different is, again, not relevant long as we don't know the details. We get to project.)

- Biting is always funnier than hitting. Don't ask me why. Probably the inefficiency factor.

- Men hit women all the time, without reason and often with far worse consequences than this. Right now, go search the web for stories of domestic abuse and feminicide. There will be no shortage. It's the hideous truth.

- People abuse fat women all the time. In fact, they also abuse thin women for being "fat." The whole culture abuses fat people with cruelty (independently of obesity as a real health problem) and encourages them to hate themselves.

- Thus the story sends a message on behalf of a class that is normally abused. That's true even if it turns out that the real story was something other than what most of us automatically imagine and project. It's irrelevant, because we are only the media recipients. (If we were the judge or jury, one would hope we attended to the real details!)

- It may make the piggish show better manners.

- And yet! There is precious little danger that this story is going to inspire copycat biters. This, too, is in contrast to stories of men beating women, which add to the atmosphere in which it seems acceptable to the beater.

So I'm laughing. If there is now a wave of ear-biting by big beautiful women, I'll take it all back.

Especially if it's a tiny, yappy dog like a chihuahua and the turtle is really big and slow. I have an image of a large tortoise slowly moving toward his food bowl while an annoying little chihuahua is running circles around him and occasionally biting at his tail. Then maybe the turtle could turn to the camera and say "At least the food here is good." I'd at least giggle.

164. Missing the point.
Remember, the participants in this thread have very few details about what happened. We have no stakes in the story. Most of us reflexively project images on it before we realize we're doing so. We don't think of it as a real event with real blood and maiming. We treat it like a parable.

I don't think any of us would endorse biting the man as an appropriate real-world action, but many of us obviously like the parable.

Why?

Because in the parable the fat girl is NOT a victim - as would usually be the case. The presumptive prey becomes the predator. It turns into a lesson about why people should be polite and not abuse others because of their physical attributes.

Even if the actual case bears no relation to these tropes, they are still activated by the story. Most of us therefore laugh.

Remember we are not the cops, jury, social workers, reporters or judges involved in this case. Also, it carries no exemplary effect - meaning, no one's going to bite other people because of it. She is no one's role model. There may not even be a follow-up story, in which case none of us will ever hear of it again.

So it will remain as an anecdote, a legend with what most of us consider an excellent message: Be nice to fat girls!

We all have had nasty stuff said to us and yet many of us were clever enough to come up with better ways to respond besides biting off an ear. The lesson I get is she was too stupid to have a witty reply.

168. Your own thoughts make it clear you have an emotional investment in this story...
even though you, too, are working with next to no facts. You, too, are also applying tropes to fill in the blanks, in this case different ones than most of the people responding here. If you think about it, emotional investment in distant and ultimately inconsequential stories about people a million miles away, part or wholly fictionalized, is both the wonder of theater since time immemorial and, in our age, the increasing bane of a reality where nothing is real and everything is either present or non-existent.

163. If you hang around outside a party at 3 am picking fights and insulting people,
then bad stuff is going to happen to you. This guy paid a slightly higher than average price for this simple lesson, but at least he won't forget it. I'm not shedding any tears for this one-eared tool...

171. I hate to say but I agree with you.
At 3am in front of a house party winding down/up if one starts shit, or even responds to shit, there's a good likelihood of a dust-up.

I've seen girls and boys lose it on a look no less at that time of night. This just happened to get physical and ironic and made the news.

187. Very true - no tears for her either. I do find the story funny, but her reaction was not acceptable
and she's going to get a lesson in that respect...

188. I wonder if she knocked him down and sat on him before she bit his ear off?
That would make the story better.

183. Paging Doctor Lecter. Paging Doctor Hannibal Lecter.
Ms. Godfrey clearly has some anger management issues that I hope she gets worked out in prison.

I can understand how some people might find it funny: One person calls another fat, the taunted individual gets angry, chases down the insulter, and then proceeds to eat one of the insulter's ears. There is irony in that, and irony can be funny. Stabbing, shooting, or beating the crap out of him would lack humor (one would hope) because it would also lack irony.

That being said, I do find it somewhat sad how some people here in this thread want to justify what she did by saying the guy deserved it. Is calling someone fat wrong? Yes. He's clearly an asshole if he did it. But physically maiming someone over an insult is disproportionate - really, the only time physical violence is called for is in self-defense.

My concern is the underlaying unspoken words of "he deserved it" - that because he was a man, that violence done to him is somehow more socially acceptable. We see this feedback in our media all the time: Man gets in an argument with a woman (especially a girlfriend / spouse), woman becomes physically abusive and the underlying message is, "Because he's a man, he's bigger than her, and therefore this is justified response."

Sexism is always a two-sided coin. Gender stereotyping is wrong, and when you use it to either favor or disadvantage one sex over the other, you inadvertently are saying the opposite thing about the other.

I think if we take anything from this story its that words are important and often have unintended consequences.

196. Wait... so he calls her fat and, in protest, she attempts to eat him? I sense a side dish of irony.
Sounds like his initial assesment was spot-on.
