2. come november, we will have a new democratic senator and governor
this embarrassment will have been a small price to pay, when compared with the gulf states and lack of oil drilling safety regulation.

3. 2 lawsuits challenge Arizona's immigration law
http://azstarnet.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/article_5f4f524e-53e0-11df-b705-001cc4c03286.html

PHOENIX - The first two challenges to Arizona's new law aimed at illegal immigrants were filed Thursday.

Attorneys for the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders charged in U.S. District Court in Phoenix that the measure, signed less than a week earlier by Gov. Jan Brewer, illegally puts the state in the business of enforcing federal immigration laws.

But attorney and state Rep. Ben Miranda, D-Phoenix, said there is a more immediate effect on Hispanics.

The measure specifically requires police, when practicable, to check the immigration status of those with whom they have official contact if there is "reasonable suspicion'' they are in this country illegally. That, he said, opens the door to racial profiling.

4. Immigration activists boycott Diamondbacks-Cubs game
http://azstarnet.com/news/article_629b03dc-53bb-11df-8a16-001cc4c03286.html

CHICAGO - Immigrant rights activists chanting "Boycott Arizona" have gathered outside Wrigley Field in Chicago as the Cubs open a four-game series against the Diamondbacks.

Protesters are upset over Arizona's tough new immigration law that makes it a crime to be in the United States illegally and lets police question anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. The law is slated to take effect this summer.

Activist George Lieu says they've sent a letter to Cubs management asking them to stop holding spring training in Arizona.

Activists nationwide have called for a boycott of Arizona tourism and of state businesses, including its athletic teams.

5. Dupnik declares immigration law an 'embarrassment'
http://azstarnet.com/article_c5aa1fc4-fd7a-5ed6-968a-0899ffcdbad1.html

"This law is unwise. This law is stupid, and it's racist," Dupnik said Wednesday. "It's a national embarrassment. … If I were a Hispanic person in the state, I would be humiliated and angered."

While Dupnik opposes what he deems an unnecessary law, he said he might have to reluctantly enforce it if the measure withstands a legal challenge.

"If the county attorney tells me credibly that I don't have any choice, or that I'm going to put our department and our county in legal jeopardy if I don't, then I'll have to think about that. It would irresponsible for me to do otherwise."

Dupnik said he agrees illegal immigrants should not be in the state but said his department already arrests and refers more illegal immigrants to the Border Patrol than any other law enforcement agency in the state and doesn't need a "new tool" to continue doing that.

6. Obama administration considers challenges to Arizona immigration law
A team of top government lawyers has quietly begun studying legal strategies for the Obama administration to mount a challenge to Arizona's new illegal immigration law, including the filing of a federal lawsuit against the state or joining a suit brought by others who believe the bill unfairly targets Latinos.

President Obama and Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. have denounced the law, leading to expectations that the administration will take action soon. Obama said Wednesday that the law, which allows police to demand proof of citizenship, threatens the "core values that we all care about."

Attorneys from the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security are examining legal options and hope to make suggestions by mid-May, before the Arizona law takes effect sometime in midsummer, officials said.
