Entire 101st to Deploy to Afghanistan
Entire 101st to Deploy to Afghanistan
April 29, 2010
Army News Service|by Alexandra Hemmerly-Brown

Throughout 2010 and 2011, more than 20,000 Soldiers from Fort Campbell's 101st Airborne Division will deploy to Afghanistan, the first time an entire Army division has deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom within one year.

During a press conference Monday, Maj. Gen. John F. Campbell, commander of the 101st, told reporters his division is well-suited to make a presence in the Afghan theater because of previous experience in the country -- the 101st's 3rd Brigade Combat Team was the first regular Army unit deployed to Afghanistan in 2001 following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"We're working on campaign continuity ... we've built relationships with our Afghan counterparts, and we've trained for Afghanistan, we know the culture ... for training purposes, I think it's the right thing to do," Campbell said on why the entire division will be deploying.

The 101st will be largely responsible for training and assisting Afghan army forces, but instead of living separately from their counterparts, the division will be exercising a new training method called "combined action."

Combined action, a concept begun by the 82nd Airborne Division, is an integrated-troops approach, where battalions of U.S. Soldiers train, live and eat with their Afghan equivalents around the clock.

7. It's not necessarily disgust as much as an observation.

Webb asks: Why so many officers?

I am, however, disgusted at the repeated deployments and the way the DoD treats (or does not treat) its veterans.

5. "Our Afghan counterparts..." I'm sorry, I feel a little lack of trust there
and it reminds me way too much of "Vietnamization"...

I am sure you are right about Campbell's 3rd star-this is his big ticket punch and his career is made if he doesn't fuck up too bad.

I was in the 82d over 40 years ago, but the 101st really does get a lot of the shit, doesn't it? Good luck, troopers...watch your backs around your "counterparts"....and your Generals, too.

8. This should have happened about a month after 9-11.
But the corrupt Cheney/Bush cabal put oil profits above national security.

11. Bump for STUPIDITY.
18 American soldiers DIED this month... and 106 so far this year. 407 since Obama placed his hand on the bible.

This isn't "on" Shrub anymore, Mr President... this is an unwinnable war, worse so than Iraq. You're chasing shadows into caves, you're creating more soldiers for the opposite side, you're perpetuating human suffering. This WILL NOT end well... and mark your calenders, this war will cost more lives than Iraq in the end.

If it's necessary to chase terrorists, and it may be... it could be done entirely with UAV's and small groups of Special Forces.

this is a M-I-S-T-A-K-E
