Billionaire Jumps Into Florida Senate Race
"Just in case Florida's Senate race wasn't interesting enough, Palm Beach billionaire Jeff Greene plans to file papers this morning to enter the contest as a Democrat," the Palm Beach Post reports.

Adam Smith: "His colorful profile -- Mike Tyson was best man at his 2008 wedding, ex-Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss lived in his guest house after prison, and he made many of his millions betting on the housing collapse that killed Florida's economy -- normally would make a candidate like Greene a long shot. But in a race where Democratic frontrunner Kendrick Meek is little known to most voters and Crist non-partisan candidacy means it will be a three-way race, Greene's ability to saturate Florida TV with commercials could make him a good major contender."

4. Kendrick Meek is a DLC darling, so maybe this guy will offer an alternative. Of course,
the "billionairre" part isn't encouraging.

Florida is a Democratic wasteland.

5. Well I guess that means Christ wins then. He sounds too nutty to win.
His money advantage will probably undo Meek in the primary.

7. Maybe The Kick In The Ass Meeks Needs...
I haven't been impressed with his campaign, or lack of one, so far. Nothing personal, but I see him over his head in this race...only competitive thanks to the split in the rushpublicans. Maybe a challenge, not matter how nutty or eclectic, is what he needs to get in the game here...really have to fight for this seat and the vote rather than hoping Crist and Rubio knock themselves silly.

8. Yuck - can we persuade him to run as a Republican?
Edited on Fri Apr-30-10 08:19 AM by karynnj
I hope his money can not buy him the nomination. It would be a disaster to have him running as the Democrat. Although, we could then see a real parallel to the Lieberman/Lamont/Schlesinger race. Schlesinger was a completely unacceptable choice - "In the Republican Party primary, Alan Schlesinger drew fire in July when it was revealed that he had been gambling under an alias in order to avoid detection as a card counter. Despite calls to withdraw from the race, Schlesinger remained in the race,<24> ultimately becoming the Republican nominee when no other Republican challengers entered the race." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate_election_in_Connecticut,_2006

I have always seen this race from a Democratic point of view. (duh) But, look at it from the Republican side. given their candidate, they had no real choice other than two Democrats - and Lieberman still caucuses with us. The current Lieberman approval ratings show that no one was really happy with this. In Florida, in the general election, a good question that will come up will be which caucus Christ will chose. (I would guess Republican)

10. If Schlesinger was successfully card-counting...
then that's a big plus in my book. Why should anyone resign from a race for displaying the raw numbers intelligence that can beat casinos at their own legally rigged game? It's ridiculous that they get to define winning as against the rules of blackjack.

12. I agree completely with you on that
But, my point was on the dynamics of the race, is a controversial candidate were to win the Democratic nomination in FL. The fact is that Schlesinger ended up with less than 10% of the vote, making the race between Lieberman and Lamont, with Lieberman winning after obviously gaining the lion's share of the Republican votes.
