"Contrite" Criswell Bible College President Lamar Cooper In Hot Water For "Wetbacks" Remark

Criswell College President Lamar Cooper angered many for referring to illegal immigrants as "wetbacks" on air before a radio-broadcasted class last Sunday.

Church officials say the remark was "off-hand" and "unfortunate."

The Dallas Morning News reports that Cooper was talking about the Arizona immigration law with a parishioner when he uttered the term.

Criswell board Chairman Michael Deahl told the Morning News that Cooper was "contrite." Church officials emphasized that the president's language was not part of his lesson that day.

The broadcast has been taken off-air indefinitely and the church is apologizing individually to each person who has complained about Cooper's language.

Criswell is a small Christian college in Dallas that serves to develop "God-called men and women in the Word (intellectually and academically) and by the Word (professionally and spiritually) for authentic ministry leadership -- all in obedience to Christ, all for the sake of the gospel, all for the glory of God."

1. That it was 'off-hand' makes it even MORE offensive.

2. Yep, another "OOOPS, I got caught, I am SO SORRY" act of "contrition."
Just like Wizard of Oz, we're never supposed to think there's someone behind the curtain...just the illusion we're supposed to see.

4. Exactly. To throw such a slur, and then to claim to be "in Christ" well, it shows just how much
"in Christ" this one actually is. I bet he's more "into the offering plate and all the Christian paraphernalia he can sell" than he is any Christ-like teachings.

5. Sure, NOW he's contrite.
Should have apologized immediately after he made the remark. Should never have made the remark. Asshat.

7. "God-called men and women...for authentic ministry leadership...
This is the crux of the matter in that they actually believe that they have been singled out by God for a special calling. This is the same mentality that was cultivated in the Catholic Church that their priests have a special calling and that virginity makes a person more holy than those who marry.

This claim was stated expressly by Pope Pius XII:
In his encyclical Sacra Virginitas published in 1954, Pope Pius XII's praise of the virtues of virginity surpassed even those made by the pagans. The Pope referred to virginity in superlative terms attributing to its practice a special nobility. Not marriage as ordained by God, but virginity was to be considered by all Catholics as the ultimate Christian state. A state the Pope claimed was "more excellent than matrimony." One section of the encyclical was appropriately titled by the Pope, "Virginity the Angelic Virtue." Pope Pius XII wrote, "Holy Virginity and absolute chastity pledged to the service of God unquestionably take rank among the priceless values which the church's Founder bequeathed to the society which He established." He added, "The superiority of virginity to marriage...is due to the superior purpose which it envisages."
Pope Pius XII, Sacra Virinita, March 25, 1954. A.A.S. 46 (1954) pp. 169-172.
In reality nothing could be more asinine in view that the First Commandment of God in Genesis is to have children..."That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one." Humans have sexual needs and desires that demand fulfillment and when suppressed can lead to deviant behavior.

This is the type of mind set that I believe contributed highly to the incidence of sex abuse of young adolescents by priests. They believed a concept that in itself is seriously flawed. Their abuse of children was just a minor bump in the road that was easily disregarded in view of their higher calling. It also explains why their superiors could overlook this because they all belonged to a special cast ordained and chosen by God. Poor Father, this is totally out of ordinary since he is such a holy man. He just needs a little counseling and a good rest.

It is the same type of mind set that Bush had in which he believed he was being directed by God Himself to invade Iraq and bring democracy to the Middle East if not wholesale conversion to Christianity. I see the same type of delusion among the Tea Baggers in which they view themselves as "True Americans" and anyone who disagrees is unpatriotic. It is this sense of superiority that is demonstrated by Cheney and his gang of neo-cons in which they believed they are infallible. They are above question and a little thing like misleading the citizens was not important in view of the larger more important mission. Their delusion of superiority is so manifest that they are unable to even acknowledge that they have been seriously mistaken. They are unreaonable zealots who can not and will not be deterred from their appointed mission.

8. Well, if he didn't really mean it . . .
Then I would tell Mr. Cooper not to worry his flabby cracker ass about it.

Aw shoot. Now I have to apologize to Lamar Cooper: I'm sorry if you were offended by my remark. It was not part of my lesson.
