FORT WORTH — Traffic investigators say speed was a contributing factor in a deadly accident on North Tarrant Parkway in Fort Worth Thursday morning.

Donna Casey, 33, had carefully strapped her two young children into car seats in the back of her new 2010 Toyota Highlander sport utility vehicle.

It was 8 a.m. and she was driving to her job at a local church where she teaches two-year-olds, but witnesses said Casey was driving fast erratically, and passing other cars in the eastbound lanes of North Tarrant Parkway when and she lost control.

She swerved into the median and then back across to the right shoulder at a speed estimated between 50 and 60 mph.

"Kind of corrected itself, and I thought maybe she'd be okay," said Kellie Mayhew. All of a sudden, it just started going fast again."

The vehicle struck a concrete culvert and rocketed into the air.

Snip: He said the family had had no problem with their brand-new Toyota.

Some 2010 Highlander models were recalled for floor mat problems, and any time a Toyota is involved, the issue of sudden acceleration is sure to be investigated.

1. "driving fast, erratically, passing other cars"
Every day on I75 a completely safe driving distance of four feet is just enough to fit some bastard Ford Earth Destroyer 25000 going 90 miles an hour between you and the molecules of their ass bumper. Every 30 seconds.

Texas rush hour drivers are the most dangerous on the planet and yes, I lived in Rome for a while. Maybe Mogadishu could pull ahead, but that's only because discourage people from machine gunning each other in traffic while changing lanes.

These people here are nuts, and I consider myself an aggressive driver . . .

12. I lived in the Dallas area for awhile and
commuted into downtown to work. Traffic was horrible and yes there were lots of bad drivers. That said, the Dallas drivers were a million times better than Oklahoma drivers.

13. I used to go down to houston with a friend from time to time
and the first time she said she had heard it was the city of bent cars or something like that and sure enough seems like every car we seen had some damage on it somewhere.

3. Why do you think that?
Honestly, do you think there aren't some folks out there who are simply asshole drivers?

6. Not so much at 50/60 miles an hour
An erratic driver would probably crash at a much higher speed.

7. A sudden flick of the wheel
at 50mph can easily cause a rollover accident in an SUV. Hell, I swerved and then overcorrected a Matrix at about 40mph and wrapped the car around a tree stump. Loss of traction at 50-60mph means a thorough loss of control.

9. Not so much with newer models
Most SUVs now have electronic stability control which is a quantum leap in technology compared to SUVs that don't have it, and a vehicle that fails Consumer Report's rollover test quickly gets taken off the market as Toyota found out.

11. What do you mean? You think one can't drive erratically at 20 mph?

...knee jerk blame is easier than thinking.

ON EDIT: You may well be right, but the desire to blame every car accident in a Toyota ON Toyota is getting a bit boring around here.

4. Sometimes, inattention can lead to overcorrection and loss of control...
Easy when you have a car full of babies.

8. The speed limit on that road is 40 mph
The area is highly residential and commercial. Unfortunately I see people driving that poorly all the time in this area, and it's not just punk kids that are too stupid to know better. It's grown men and women that damn well should know better. I guess it's possible that a stuck accelerator is involved, but I'm more inclined to believe she was just driving while stupid.

14. I'm willing to wait for the investigation into this accident

But it does fit the profile of sudden acceleration. It may or may not be the vehicle.
