Feds raise pressure on BP over oil spill
Venice, Louisiana (CNN) -- The federal government is heightening the pressure on BP, pushing the oil company to do more to stop well leaks gushing thousands of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico and to beef up its response to the potential environmental impact on the coast.

"We'll continue to urge BP to leverage additional assets," U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano told reporters on Friday as the massive oil slick approached the Louisiana coast. "It is time for BP to supplement their current mobilization as the slick of oil moves toward shore."

BP, which owns the ruptured well, said officials expect oil to reach land sometime Friday, with Venice and Port Fourchon the first places likely to be affected.

Doug Suttles, chief operating officer of BP, said the company has had only three priorities since the April 20 rig explosion that led to the oil spill: stop the flow of oil, minimize its impact and keep the public informed.

"We've so far mounted the largest response effort ever done in the world," Suttles said at the same news conference. "We've utilized every technology available, we've applied every resource request. ... We welcome every new idea and
every offer of support."

1. It will be interesting to see if they put their money where their mouth is
when this is over by installing the same safety mechanisms as required by other countries. From what I've heard the US gave a free pass on not using the best safety devices to stop oil flow.

It will be interesting to see how much money the oil companies donate to elect their favorite politicians to office with the inane SC's corporate personhood ruling for contributions.

This country is so F'ed up in so many ways it's getting beyond description.

2. Just reported on our Fla news..oil expected to hit panhandle beaches by Monday
as winds are expected to turn east ..we were even warned as far down as Clearwater that our beaches could be effected.

This is an utter disgrace! Beyond any words i can say..

and to think..just a few weeks ago i was accused of all sorts of things by Democrats here on DU ..as i posted the reports from environmentalists of how bad Obama's betrayal was of opening our waters to drill baby drill! I and others warned of these dangers ..and had our posts deleted and were screamed down..when we posted how dangerous these rigs were to our eco system!

I won't forget who those people were..

nor will our eco-system..for decades to come!

This was one such reply to me when i was posting how dangerous Obama's opening of our coastlines to oil drilling would and could be....I had posted what the Sierra Club was saying ..and a du'er replied this to me.......

I will not forget!

Blind obedience is a dangerous thing..to all of us and our eco-system!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

It's embarrassing how some environmental groups are so goddamn knee-jerky. Maybe they need more money... as one who gives to the Sierra Club on occasion and actually worked for Greenpeace for a stint, I know how it works.
