An arrest has been made in the double shooting on the Blue Ridge Parkway.Updated: 10:56 p.m.
AFTON — The shotgun-wielding gray-haired man who wounded two people on the Blue Ridge Parkway on Monday evening shot his victims apparently at random, then shoved them over the mountainside, according to the uncle of one of the victims.
One victim, an 18-year-old woman from Palmyra, fought back against her attacker, tearing the gunman’s shirt before he shoved her down an embankment, her uncle said.
“She took flight toward the guy and picked a scrap with him,” Augusta County Sheriff Randy Fisher confirmed Tuesday.
The gunman then hurled rocks at her, the uncle added.
The victims were in a green Honda at the overlook when the shooter pulled in, pointed a shotgun through the driver’s-side window and fired, hitting both in the back, Fisher said.
Haley said he is hopeful that the law enforcement agencies investigating the incident — including the FBI. the National Park Service. the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. the Virginia State Police and the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office — can find and arrest the gunman before anyone else is hurt.
“I just want this S.O.B. caught,” he said
The young woman eventually was picked up by a man and a woman who were driving along the parkway. The gunman then fired his shotgun at the fleeing car, the uncle said.
The other victim, a 27-year-old Charlottesville man, had fallen some 120 feet from the overlook.
