Why didn't Obama stop the oil spill? |
|
And why did he wait so long to act?
Those seem to be the questions a lot of the folks on the right are asking - such as Mark Levin and Rush Limbaugh, very loud, right-wing radio propagandists extraordinaire.
I monitor these guys from time to time and I wonder why it took them 8 days to blame it all on Barack Obama? They must have been busy either playing the mainstream Republican game of backdoor politics or they were criticizing Obama for something else? What would they have him do? And why haven't they suggested it before now? This is very possibly an environmental disaster and it surprised us all when it happened. Who, in the media, thought or said something like this was likely to happen? Surely not those that were cheer-leading to "Drill, Baby, Drill".
I think they need to bring in the military, coast guard, and whomever else they can get to help and map the most valuable wildlife preserves, fisheries and shrimp beds, and historic areas along the coast. The oil spill is approaching fast. In my opinion, they should burn the oil that is approaching these special areas. Much, or most, of the oil will escape burning. But they may save these most beautiful and important lowlands? Just my suggestion.

2. I think part of the problem is that the military isn't set up to clean up oil spills. |
|
It's not their job so they don't have the equipment for it. When they are talking about using the robotic subs to plug the well - the oil company has them but the navy doesn't - not ones that can do that.
I think they would do anything they could that they think would be effective. The problem is that that appears limited. :(
The resources of ALL the oil companies should be out there working this. I don't know if they are or not. Bill BP for the cost but get everything any of them have on it. The repercussions from this are going to effect them all so they actually should be doing everything they can to minimize it just from their own selfish perspective.
The NYT article said the weather was too bad and the water too choppy to perform many of the controlled burns that they have wanted to do.

5. I think that is right.. |
|
The military is not equipped to handle this type of disaster. The best they can do is to co-ordinate the burning with local fishermen and naturalists and also with the oil companies. They need to protect these most valuable treasures.

I guess somebody has to do it or we can leave them to their own devices, unknowing the danger therein.

Seriously, it seems to be a hidden secret that makes it's five minutes of news once a day when they (the Coast Guard) give a briefing....

The weather plays a big role in burning the oil. Wind and waves break up the oil slick and they have to wait for, or find the right conditions for a burn. In the mean time nature keeps on rolling.

It's likely to hit marshland which is impossible to clean. With sand you could remove large amounts and replace it clean sand.

17. Did You Expect Anything Different??? |
|
Last night Anthony Weiner nailed it when he said the one thing that holds all these shitstains together is their hatred of President Obama. It creates massive hypocrisies, but it's also very, very predictable. Now had this happened under boooshie, we'd get the denial, then how the "librul media" is getting its knickers in a twitter and how great the response is. But with this President, everything he does is wrong and there's no extend the hate spewers will go to do a 180 backflip in their "criticism". Unfortunately the corporate media loves to echo these asshats...some to ridicule, others to spread the lies...and this distorts their real impact on what a majority is thinking but it drives the "conventional wisdom".
Honestly, I have no idea how you deal with this crisis other than to throw in whatever resources you can where needed. I have been to the lower Mississippi area and seen a lot of restoration work by biologists and conservation groups who have a very good handle on the ecology and the impact. I hope they can find a way to cap the wellhead ASAP. I have faith in this President to think on his feet. Of course the corporate media will second guess and the hate spewers will shriek their usual pablum, but it's the results that matter and I see a far more competant man in charge than we had under the rushpublicans.
Cheers...

I want effective government. We can have a small government that is powerless, or a big government that is powerless. It isn't about how many rules we have, but how well we enforce them.

This is an environmental disaster that Obama & Congress don't give a damn about because if they did they would have to acknowledge that they are wrong about offshore drilling.
So they pretend that nothing is wrong and hope that the situation will just go away if they pay no attention to it! :grr:

27. Established protocol left BP in the position to honestly assess/report the situation to the Feds |
|
Edited on Sat May-01-10 06:57 PM by KittyWampus
It turns out BP was wrong or lying. The Feds oversee what goes on during a spill and coordinates responses but must rely on corporate information.
So unless Rush and the NYTimes (who also had the gall to fault the Feds/Obama) want the Government to completely take over ALL drilling operations from now on, they should shut their piehole.

Maybe the Silver Surfer, too.
Since they can't possibly be calling for a big gummint bailout, that must be what the wingnuts are hinting at, although when dealing with the chronically bat-shit crazy, you have to turn the sarcasm/
Raving idiots that they are, they take themselves much too seriously to appreciate any trace of irony or sarcasm.
