I read a remark on DU today that scared me a bit
Edited on Sat May-01-10 02:01 AM by truedelphi
I am not going to call that person out, but they basically said that they can "tell if someone is a Republican" by looking at them. It was an offhand remark, and maybe they felt it when they said it, but I hope it isn't something that they live by.

####

Many many years ago, I was spending part of my summer hitchhiking with my first husband between Chicago and Toronto, Canada.

J. was a long haired, tall, well built man. Six feet two and sturdily built. He looked a bit older than his twenty three years.

I looked a bit younger than my twenty years. We often left Toronto in order to make it to family affairs or to various dentist appointments that I had made before we moved to Canada. Bus fares were cheap enough that we could have gone that route, but they were laboriously slow, hitting every town and hamlet between the two urban centers.

They were such slow affairs that often we simply hitchhiked. This was the summer of 1972. Rides were easy to come by and it was quite a bit of fun to travel that way.

Anyway, at the end of the line, we were at a truck stop not far from my parent's home in Southwestern Suburbs of Chicago. A truck stop near I 80. We had decided we'd spend some change and have lunch. Then the plan was, we would call my home and have my mother drive over and get us.

Well, just as we were about to finish the meal, a policeman lumbered over to our table. He stood over us, and the long scary shadow of the law fell across J. And I.

"Just what do you think you are doing here, Young Man?" the police man fairly sneered. "Your companion seems to be on the rather young side, and you are aware of the Mann act, I hope."

My stomach dropped out from under me. I knew full well about the Mann Act (a law that has to do with the illegality of transporting under age women and girls across state lines for the purpose of having sex with them) With great urgency, I flipped through my purse and pulled out my driver's license, and a wrinkled copy of our marriage license.

J. had already gotten out his driver's license, to comply with the request - actually the order -to offer some I.D.

The police man was not at all convinced of these documents being legal. He barked at us that we better have some other method of proving that I was over the age of 18, and that we were indeed married.

I stifled the resentment I had, and a feeling to just go for it -- rise up and throttle the man. Through countless student protests of the War in Vietnam I had decided that there were two types of police - those who were bullies, and those who were decent people attempting to do a hard job. This officer clearly fell into the Bully category. However, it dawned on me that as my maiden name was on my marriage license, I could insist that he make the local phone call to ask my mother who I was, what my age was, whom she thought I may be with, if we were married, and what our plans were.

"I'm not making any such phone call," sneered the cop. "But if you have a dime, I will be willing to ask your mother some questions.

Through all of this, J. remained stoic. As a long haired man living in the MidWest, he knew when it was best to be extremely compliant and quiet. I resented the fact that both of us were being forced to "assume the position." He had done one tour of duty in Vietnam. The reason for us being in Toronto was that before our move there, he received far too many notices from the Army that he had done so well during this tour that perhaps they might ask him to go back. Now I intensely disliked the fact that despite his having seen as much danger in Vietnam as this southside suburban cop had seen, he was being treated like an inferior human being.

But we did get up from our table, asking the waitress to save our Cokes, and went off to the phone booths. My hand trembled as I dropped the dime into the phone and heard the familar ring.

My mother answered and when I explained what was happening, I could hear alarm in her voice.
I handed the phone to the police officer, and he snarled out some questions for her. The angry red color drained from his face when he realized that he was not going to be able to further disrupt our lives. The two of us had checked out, and without apology, he told us we were free to go.

Quietly, as though we were not out of danger, we returned to the table. The Cokes still sitting there looked refreshing. As I was about to suck up every drop and push away the embarrassment, the fear and also the heat of the event, I saw another man approaching. He was not a policeman but someone I immediately identified as a redneck. My fear level rose back up.

The guy carried an extra thirty pounds or more, all of it in his gut. His attire was your basic flannel shirt, blue jeans and white socks and scuffed shoes. I shut my eyes for a quick second: envisioning the fact that he was here to make a scene.

Perhaps he was on a mission to tell my husband that lily-bellied Commie peaceniks like him were the reason why we were losing the war in Vietnam? Maybe he would spit at us? Maybe he would decide to "be a man" and so he would push at J. who might push back. And that would offer that police man just what he wanted - a real reason to arrest the long haired "hippy" freak.

He got closer to the table. In a fairly nasal and whiny voice, coupled with a Southern accent, he called out as he approached, "Good day to you." He kicked back the other chair at our table and leaned against it.

"I just wanted to tell you how bad I feel on your behalf. I think how ashamed I am of our country that you two fine people were basically assaulted by that man in a uniform. I have no idea who he thinks he is, but you two were sitting here eating your dinner, and minding your own business, quiet like, and since he wouldn't apologize to you, I sure would like to." He extended his hand, and J. and I found ourselves both shaking it.

"Jes' so you know, I am Daniel. I do a regular run between Chicago and Mobile, Alabama, and I want you to know if we never meet again, it was a pleasure seeing the grace and dignity with which you handled that SOB."

Then as quickly as he entered our lives, Daniel left.

J. And I sat there stunned, a host of emotions rising up in our bodies.

J. then relaxed into his sweetest, sunniest smile, and I started laughing till the tears came.

We both were laughing when my mother showed up. We knew there was no way to convey to her what we had assumed the actions of our new friend were going to be, nor our relief at how we had misjudged him. She had never lived through a time when the generations had been so divided, and she wouldn't understand how or why we had misjudged Daniel. Nor could she understand our relief and delight at finding out that truly, it is often a mistake to judge a book by its cover.

5. You write extremely well!
The words fell away, and I was there in that diner with you, watching that bastard cop.

My. God.

You should put this one in your Journal; it might get onto the Home page, in the highlighted Journal column, on the right...

Thank you so much for telling us this!

57. Thank you CaliforniaPeggy.
I put it up, went to bed,and forgot all about it till about an hour ago.

Amazed to find it was on the Home page and had 126 recs!

I'm glad to get Daniel's story out there - he made what would have been one of the worst moments of my life into an event I remember with (happy) tears in my eyes.

And to this day, whenever I remember the moment when I first saw him, I feel all that initial terror coming back. And then the mix of emotions - how good it was to meet him, what a great surprise and delight his actions and words were, and of course a bit of shame that I had judged him by his appearance.

6. appearances can be deceiving
I'm fairly intimidating. I'm 6'2, very big, shaved head, goatee. I look like a biker. I've never ridden a motorcycle, and I'm very much a pacifist, but my daughter says I scare all her friends until they get to know me and realize I'm just a big teddy bear.

Great story. I ran into a lot of very nice people when I lived in Alabama who look like the average "redneck" freeper. You never know, and making assumptions and judging people on their appearance is a huge mistake.

7. You probably look a lot like my brother
who is also a blues player and a vegetarian. He also rides a big Yamaha.

He was pulled up for speeding on a country road by a young cop. Dismounted, took his helmet off and was reaching into his pocket for his license when the cop pulled his gun on him. Remember we have very few guns here, so this is pretty big deal.

Dave just put his hands up. Recounting the story to me later, and he was around 45 when this happened, he said, 'I just stared at this kid with a gun. No older than mid 20s and he was SHAKING with fear.'

8. I once knew a guy in the Army ...

Tobacco chewer ,southern drawl, and the back of his neck got bright red in the summer.

One of the funniest liberals I have ever met... he overjoyed in cracking jokes about him being a "redneck" and the south ..had the whole platoon laughing their asses off one night in the tent as he told stories.

And black men... some of the scariest looking ones turned out to be some of the best friends I ever had.. and I was just a young white male with glasses.

Stereotypes are fake Hollywood creations.

9.  Great story. We should all remember this when judging posters from red states as well.
Edited on Sat May-01-10 03:34 AM by saracat
I have seen folks attacked for being from Democrats from red states and seen other progressives hold them responsible for all events that occur in those states. As a red state dem myself, I can attest to the fact that some of the most liberal dedicated democrats w live in red states and they should be treasured and encouraged rather than disdained.

And how quick we are in RL to misjudge a southern accent! We forget some of our most productive Democratic President's were from the South.

Thank you again for a really wonderful story!

23. wow -- what a wonderful story!! and, so true.
i lived in the mountain in East Tennessee for way too long, and if i judged books by their cover, i'd have gone crazy up there b/c everyone seemed threatening to my sensibilities. and really -- that wasn't the case. not by a long shot. it was a good education in addition to the college work...and it's by far served me better than some of my coursework.

24. Great story-and I'll be the first to admit-guilty as charged
i am as guilty as anyone of assuming a person is a teabagger by their looks.
I had a similar experience on the 2008 election night.I had a middled-aged typical redneck patient-or so I thought. As I cared for him,I found it interesting that he and his wife were following the vote tallies so closely. Finally,I had to say something. The man's wife said "we are hoping that Obama will win by a landslide".We all laughed,as they assumed I was a tight-assed Rebublican Stepford wife. After my shift,I sat with them and cheered the vote results. You really can't judge a book by their color.

30. Great story, well told
Around here in our little pocket of blue in a sea of red, it is hard to tell who is Republican or Democratic. A lot of the older people that look like the Teabaggers are the most liberal voters and activists you could imagine. An amazing number of the younger, long haired pot smokers are right wingers who make skin heads look liberal. You just can't tell by looking.

31. We can't help but prejudge, the key is to treat everyone with dignity and respect
just in case we're wrong. People can sense a negative vibe, and oftentimes, they return the same negativity that they sense directed towards them. So it's best to be neutral at first, at least until our prejudices are confirmed.

However, I do add many snarks to OPs. As many of you remember from your SATs, GREs, etc... beware of the absolutes, especially of the negative types. I do not know of which you refer to but could that poster have been in a sarcastic mood?

I'm against fundies but there have been several young women who professed to be and I'd have loved to...

I'm against republicans and, well there may be exceptions to all rules.

I'm against polluters but; make that two.

I'm against hate.

I'm against war. The US Civil War and WWII MAY be exceptions.

I'm against many things but on a personal basis, I try to look at the other side before condemning.

Just saying.

and there is no getting around that. We need to stay open minded and find common purpose wherever we can. The republican forums I watch are rife with name calling, labelling and rejecting their own as unworthy and unneeded. Actively work to avoid falling into that trap. The "us vs. them" mentality is a cultural shorthand that will lead us astray every time. (so said the fat white 50-something gun carrying Texas... Liberal)

45. My landlord looks like your typical rural Kansas Republican.
He is actually not political at all, but he is very nice (as is his wife), and they have some serious money. When we talk abou stuff, it is evident that if he did follow politics and vote, he would be a liberal. (I try to get him to do so, but he and his wife are too busy taking care of their rental properties and riding their motorcycles and also riding in the single-occupant planes they built from kits).

I always liked him and his wife, but until I got a chance to just chat with them about things not related to the apartmen I rent from them, I simply assumed they were Republicans. They are not, nor do they subscribe to Republican attitudes or ideas.

I would much rather know people and make sure they are hateful before I decide to hate them.

46. As bad as that time was I feel it is allot worse now. I have this scared feeling all the time. I
live in a rural area in a small town yet I feel sad for this country and its people. I feel bad for minorities to see how many of our fellow whites treat others. I feel ashamed to be an american because we are losing any empthy we have for each other. Teabaggers misguided hate for their fellow americans. God help this country. We seem to be moving backwards. This country needs to get a freakin gripe.

47. I am often reminded of my prejudices, as well.
We went to a screening of "To Kill A Mockingbird" at a nearby university about a month ago. On the way out, we passed a well-dressed, elderly white gentleman who was walking to the parking lot at the same time we were. My knee-jerk reaction was "Oh, probably a Republican. Wonder what he was doing here?"

As we neared our car, we admired the bumper stickers on the Corolla parked next to us. Its bumper was plastered with religious tolerance and Obama stickers, including the one where the O is a peace sign. I saw the lights flash as someone hit their remote entry keyfob but didn't think anything about it.

And then as we were backing out of our parking space, I saw the elderly "Republican" man we'd passed earlier get into the driver's seat of the peacemobile.

I just love being reminded how wrong I am about these things. Gives me hope, it does.

Merely being on the right team doesn't impute any special intellectual or other superpowers on a person.

50. You did a great service with this post. Many, many thanks.
When you've been hurt as you were, as we have been a lot lately, it's easy to assume things that make you upset before and outside of the real facts. Makes sense; it's survival mechanisms, but it takes a lot of maturity and grace on both your part and your "redneck" friend's to take the trouble to find out it's not as you think.

Good on ya, and I hope something brought that cop around somehow.

53. Thank you for that lovely story, True.
But I'm furious that the cop behaved that way. (Did you REALLY look THAT young? ! ) It's always good to know there are people around like Daniel.

That men like that trucker from Alabama still existed and still exist is a reason to continue to feel hope for this country.

I'm guessing that cop had missed the fresh donuts that morning and was just short of his bust quota for the month.

Four years earlier, he'd probably been beating up peaceniks in Lincoln Park.

56. You can tell if a person is a Republican
by cutting them in half and counting their rings.

Sure, you get a bunch of false negatives, but that's the price you pay for certainty.

69. You can't "tell by looking at someone" whether they are a liberal or a RWer, most of the time.
Sometimes people look like their stereotype. Other times, they do not. It's a real mistake to assume you know someone's political leanings by their appearance.

74. Thanks.
Some of the work I am doing in conjunction with first rate scientists whose recent lives have been involved in exploring the GMO issue will be published over the next two weeks.

And between June 1997, and October 2005, thirty seven of my articles were written and published by The Coastal Post. (Editor Don Deane) On account of Deane, I was the first journalist north of the S.F. Bay area to point out the research about the dangers of MTBE's. The Coastal Post beat out the Mighty San Francisco Chronicle by three months in covering this story, and in the end, I had to call the Chron reporter with corrections to their articles. (Updates that they seemed to appreciate having.)

Then I did articles on everything from local issues such as School Budgets to tangling with Monsanto over its ubiquitous product RoundUp.

My work on the Stolen Election was published at the Coastal Post and then "kidnapped" by over three hundred blogs on the internet.

My last article for the C.P. was on the Katrina tragedy and the genocide that occurred from the way that Bush and his people handled the catastrophe. Before using the word "genocide," I called Ted Kennedy's office to ask his staff what their office thought of my use of the word. The staffer there said without hesitation, "Go for it. Call it what it is."

I still miss that man's staff and regret that I never met him. But the staffers were a good set of people, and never gave me the current day answer "Go look it up for yourself on the internet." They were always available whenever I needed help understanding any Senate Bill.
