Can someone explain why today is not Labor day in the US?

Is it really because Americans don't want to be lumped together with non-Americans?

1. No

It is because capitalism fears and despises socialism, and working people by extension. Our labor movement has been subverted and emasculated, stampeded by the Red Scare into denial of the international nature of labor.

Solidarity!

2. I thought about that this morning as well
I think it's not a matter of what Americans want or don't want, but that the the goverment wouldn't want the American working class to feel any sense of international solidarity.

7. Because then we would have two months in a row without a holiday.
August & September would start to feel REALLY long.

8. A labor organizer once told me that the powers-that-be arranged for a September
Labor Day to distance America from Communism/Socialism.

Law Day, U.S.A.

Through the efforts of then American Bar Association President Charles S. Rhyne, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed May 1 (Previously known as May Day or International Workers' Day) would now be known as Law Day, U.S.A. in 1958.<1> Its observance was later codified into law by Public Law 87-20 on April 7, 1961.<2>
