2. Yep, and all the other countries where they do this type of drilling
DEMAND that those acoustic triggers be put on or they are not permitted to drill! I bet this was one topic of discussion at that secret Cheney energy meeting back in 2000!

3. Well, you see, it's $500k each...
...and they have hundreds of rigs. So why spend the money if there's like a 0.1% chance they'll be needed?

Makes perfect economomic sense...

5. Having to qualify the word would seem to indicate it's lack.
Perhaps that was your point?

10. a 0.1% chance on any given rig (if we accept your number without question)
then multiply that by the number of rigs (hundreds by your account)

that will give you a better understanding of the probability of needing one

better demonstration.

the likely lack of serious consequences for the company into the equation.

20. Yea and it's now going to cost them Billions, and that makes economic sense too!
I'd love to be a fly on the wall at BP right now!!!

23. Wanna bet?
The rig was leased so BP is protected and insured, just in case. The leasing company will declare bankruptcy and disappear as the rig was almost certainly the entity's only real asset.

8. Apparently the U.S rigs are the only ones in the world that
are not mandated to have these devices.

Well I believe this should be a regulation that is implemented immediately.

14. If we take that point then that means that every single industry
starting from Reagan must be inspected immedietly.

Coal
Gas
Food Industry
Oil
Deadly Chemical plants

I am sure I have missed other major industries.....

Every single industry has been violating the laws because of the "Free Market, self-regulation" crowd. This is not President Obama's fault.

So far this year....

Coal
Oil

A Washington state oil refinery hit by a deadly blast and fire early Friday was recently fined for safety violations amid what federal watchdogs call a troubling trend of serious accidents at refineries.

Which one is next? We are probably do for a huge chemical plant explosion. Just a matter of time.

15. I am sure the deregulation has led to more greed and less safety in virtually
every industry..particularly anything energy related...

Is is not the fault of President Obama, but unfortunately, he is the one who is going to have to resolve it.

Sure hope he has the courage, the wisdom and the intestinal fortitude to what has to be done.

17. Agreed! I don't think he will have a choice it's a damn shame
that he is going to have to take another industry on.

The RightWing and the MSM will scream that he is trying to take over and run the industry. We will hear the same thing from the Coal industry.

How many battles can we realistically expect him to take on? I am not saying it's not possible but damn....

18. don't forget the regular outbreaks of food contamination due to
lack of inspectors and lax enforcement of existing laws. The GOP wants business to rule the country and be responsible to no one but "the market"...seems like they got their wish.

13. Do you know who I personally blame for the BP fuckup?

And his secret "Energy Task Force" papers.

Obama needs to declassify this IMMEDIATELY, or any Senator with access to it can automatically declassify it by showing it to the public in a speech.
