Photos from Gulf Coast Beaches--Add yours
These are for everyone who loves the Gulf coast, and for those who have never been there. If you have any pictures, add them. These are from Grayton Beach, Florida, taken last fall on a family trip.

2. You made me cry, you know.
As we all sit down here waiting for the oil to come in.

I remember Biloxi before there were any casinos, nothing but sand and water on the south side of the
highway.
And took it for granted.
Damn.

5. Gorgeous pics! We're heading down for the very first time the middle of June.
I'm hoping that they still look that way. We're going to be around Rotonda West with our in-laws. We love the beach, but mostly visit NC, NJ or DE beaches, so I'm anxious to see the FL beaches. I'm so sad about the ecosystem down there getting pummeled with this crap. Our daughter is thinking of volunteering for the Tri-State bird rescue to get in her HS volunteer hours, and we saw that they had some reps down there trying to help the poor birds.

You will enjoy the area. They have many restaurants where you can sit outside and they have live music at night. They call the people who go there, not coconuts, but "Boca-nuts".

Go to Boca Grande, Englewood Beach and North Jetty Beach in Venice, Florida.

This is just one neighborhood near Boca Grande..

10.  It's beyond sad... devastating... these beaches are a treasure...
Edited on Sat May-01-10 05:17 PM by lib2DaBone
Wildlife, tourism, fishing industry.. it will all be wiped out with ZERO reimbursement from either Washington or the Oil Companies.

This is the channel by the lighthouse at Stumph Pass State Park near Englewood. Some of the best fishing in Florida for Pompano, Grouper ,Sea Trout and Snapper. Also.. some HUGE sharks...(Hammer Heads, Bulls and Makos)

Near here is Cabbage Key and Cayo Costa Islands that are only accessible by boat. Jimmy Buffet wrote a song about the Bar on Cabbage Key.. called "Cheese burger in Paradise". Well, at least it used to be...

13. Not technically a beach, but still part of the Gulf.
Edited on Sat May-01-10 07:23 PM by BreweryYardRat
My father and I lived in a condo adjoining the Intercoastal Waterway a few years ago. I could walk a few feet out the back door, climb down the sea wall, and go swimming.

The Gulf beaches are one of the few good things about living in this otherwise shitty state.

18. POsting so I can find this tomorrow
We drove down to St. Marks Wildlife Refuge today and took pictures along the coast near the lighthouse. This area is not the lovely white beaches that the typical tourists flock to. It is the swampy salt march coatline with the vegetation that acts as the nurseries for much of the Gulf sea life, just as Louisiana's swampy coastline does.

These salt marshes continue almost undeveloped until the Weeki Wachee area - miles and miles of nearly undisturbed wetlands that need the salt water to maintain the ecosystem. I am hoping that the wind will remain from the southeast and blow most of the spill to the same part of the Gulf coast to limit the damage to only one place, even though I know this is not going to happen. It is already a tragedy, I just hope it does not grow to be the monumental disaster that some are forecasting.

Anyway, I was too tired tonight to prepare the pictures for upload and port them. Tomorrow.
