My understanding of the oil spill is that BP is on the hook for the cost of the clean up.

NPR said yesterday that drilling a new line to intersect the old one is going to cost several hundred million dollars. Has any one seen what the likely total clean up costs will be? It seems certain to reach $1B but I think it could be much higher. How high would it have ot go before companies would no longer be willing to accept the risk.

BP will be on the hook for the clean-up, but they will have very little responsibility for damages to local fishermen, shrimpers, etc., caused by their negligence. The Supreme Court made sure of that.

2. No one knows until they figure out how to stop the leak.

Because of the contamination of extremely difficult to restore wetlands and fishing grounds, plus the possibility of gulf currents taking the mess to Florida and beyond, this is gonna cost waaaaay more than a billion dollars.
