Spelling.....egh.. anyone else???
I have trouble with it.
I use the spell check and am much better than I was, but this is still a problem.
Anyone else willing to admit it? Am I alone here?
Thanks.

1. My spelling isn't bad but I think I'm a little dyslexic
so I transpose characters all the time. If I do your taxes, check my totals. :)

6. I only do that when I type
I can't remember the last time I spelled anything wrong that I was writing by hand. But give me a keyboard and I embarrass myself. :)

2. Did you read a great deal as a kid?
I think the fact that I read tons as a youngster helped me learn how to spell -- just seeing the words spelled correctly over and over kinda locked them in during my brain-building years.

12. That goes without saying! I wouldn't know how to read without their
invaluable talent for teaching and making me want to read! :hi:

5. It really shouldn't matter
With spell check and the current technology, you should never have to worry about your spelling.

I love my iPhone cause it has that self-correcting feature. What a wonder!

But if you ever need a proofreader, I am usually a good speller. Won the bee in 8th grade:) And I'll gladly help out if you ever need it.

Here's how I teach kids who struggle with spelling - learn the tricks. I can still remember some teacher in elementary school telling us to think 'wed nes day' and I have never spelled that word wrong. Visualization helps also. So if you can think of a visual trick to help you spell a word, I would recommend that.

My biggest problem is with typos. I never learned to type as a kid and am a hunt and pecker as an adult. Arrgh.

9. My spelling is atrocious now and I used to be great at it.
I won a spelling Bee in 6th grade and went on to graduate 2nd in my class. After being exposed to carbon monoxide for several months and in that same time frame having a heart cath, not only did my spelling go but my ability to express myself clearly at times also went with it. I used to be able to visualize and now I can't.

10. I have butterfingers on the keyboard myself
and sometimes, I just don't care. If the only way you can attack my argument is to go after the spelling than that says a lot more about you than me.

13. Butterfingers on keyboard? Me too...too anxious to
get a post up, then, forget to check it myself, and I then go on to read another post..etc. I am glad that I am not the only one here.

14. I think the larger issue is how much poor spelling and grammar
impact the argument. I tell my students (college age) that I won't mark-off for spelling and grammar unless those errors negatively impact my ability to comprehend what they are trying to say.

No one is perfect all the time and failing to catch an error is common and understandable - it's also pretty easy to see when it is an inadvertent mistake, as opposed to laziness (like the folks who insist that capitalization and punctuation are unnecessary).

16. I have a grandaughter that is the worst speller in the world.

:-)

I read her Facebook Page and I cringe, yet she does very well in school.

I am not referring to Facebook-speak shortcuts,by the way,but some of her self-chosen categories for pics etc.

20. 2nd place - All-City Spelling Bee-Muskogee, OK-1969
Besides the 3 run triple I hit in Little League it was the biggest event in my 14 yr old life and I'll never misspell assassination ever again!

Spelling has always been easy for me but I was kind of a nerd in grade school and junior high. One thing I don't do is judge someone by their spelling.

21. Ever check out stuff on YouTube and read the comments people post? I swear, it's the only
place where a ten-word sentence can have seven misspelled words in it. It's enough to make you cry.

Want to keep your spelling sharp? Just read constantly, and do crossword puzzles as often as you can. 'Sgood for ya.
