Underdog Brunner shows skill
ENQUIRER ENDORSEMENT FOR US SENATE

Ohio Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher, a longtime figure in statewide politics, is pulling away from his rival for the nomination, Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, in a race that has seen heated charges and counter-charges recently. A new Quinnipiac poll shows Fisher with a 41-24 lead.



Fisher is backed by most of the Democratic establishment. He has served the state ably, and could do so in the U.S. Senate, where he would focus on his strength - economic development - to help Ohio's job picture. If the economy isn't fixed, "then nothing else really matters," he says, adding that he'd oppose measures that hurt Ohio manufacturing.

But we think Democratic voters ought to give feisty underdog Brunner a good look in this race as well. She has shown resilience and policy-making skill as secretary of state, a difficult post on which both parties exert great pressure. We haven't agreed with some of her decisions on election policy, but she has stood her ground credibly on reforms and has worked out some snags in the voting process. Her ability to work with people of divergent views, while holding true to her liberal roots, shows she could be effective in the Senate, where she'd like to join her mentor, Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio. Brunner has leveraged her meager financial resources - most of the big money backs Fisher - with grassroots organizing and online campaigning.

Republican

The Democratic winner will face former Rep. Rob Portman of Terrace Park, unopposed for the GOP. Portman has amassed plenty of funding, has polled well, and has given Democrats little fodder to use against him. His reputation as an effective lawmaker respected by peers in both parties makes him a formidable candidate in the fall.

I just saw and spoke w/ Jennifer on 4/28 in Athens, OH. Although still a long shot she is very much
in the race ..... if you are from Ohio please vote for my friend and ask 1 person to do the same.

Remember turn outs for primary races are very small so this race could very well be won @ the margins.

She stood up for Ohio in 2008 and in 2010 Ohio will stand up for her.
