Vitter wants BP to build a dome over the spill?
Huh? I don't get this; what would that accomplish? And I'm assuming it's over the spill...

http://www.bayoubuzz.com/News/Louisiana/Government/Louisiana_Senator_Vitter_Wants_Spill_Efforts_Streamlined_BP_To_Build_Dome__10742.asp

U.S. Sen. David Vitter today inspected the damage caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and met with federal, state and local officials to discuss the ongoing cleanup efforts. Following his discussions, he urged Cabinet members and state and local officials in the meetings to streamline the cleanup efforts of BP and federal and state agencies.

“Based on the latest briefings and discussions with the federal and state parties involved, BP is spread too thin in trying to both cap the well and remediate the damage along the coastline, producing an inefficient and ineffective response,” said Vitter. “I urge all involved to allow BP to focus all of its efforts on building a dome and drilling a relief well at the source of the spill so that federal and state officials can focus their efforts on protecting and cleaning up the coast.”

Earlier today, Vitter took an aerial tour of the affected area in a U.S. Coast Guard aircraft with Homeland Security Sec. Janet Napolitano and other officials, and he later attended a meeting in Robert with Napolitano and Interior Sec. Ken Salazar, along with other federal, state and local officials and representatives from the Coast Guard. Vitter was also set to meet with representatives of the Louisiana fishing industry to discuss ways to mitigate the damage to Louisiana fisheries.

“Our prayers continue to go out to the families and co-workers of the victims of the explosion,” said Vitter. “We’re facing a very serious situation along the Gulf Coast.”

In his meetings with Sec. Napolitano and other officials, Vitter also urged them to do whatever is necessary to help those most directly affected, including Louisiana fishermen and oystermen. Vitter intends to offer them any support they need from the federal level and will continue monitoring the efforts to protect Louisiana’s coast and the state’s valuable fishing habitats.

That is about how long it took to shut down a similar leak near Australia not too long ago.

I don't pretend to understand the process but I've heard people talking about it -- structurally it may be more like an umbrella than a solid dome

7. Hey Vitter...
I hear wads of used diapers are remarkably effective at capping undersea gushers. Why not strap a few to your ample haunches, swim down to about 5000 feet, and see what happens? It's the free market thing to do.

Best of luck, you fucking fetishist hypocrite.

10. I believe the dome is on the ocean floor

http://www.smartplanet.com/technology/blog/science-scope/engineers-are-building-an-underwater-dome-to-stop-the-oil-spill-from-spreading/1441/

^snip^

Some engineers have come up with a more promising idea: They want to plug the leak by placing a giant dome over it. Engineers are currently designing the giant dome, but it could take up to a month to build and is only viable as a short term solution. Ideally, the dome would stop the oil and then pump the oil into tanks on the surface

11. The idea is to capture the oil as it rises to the surface...
Edited on Sat May-01-10 07:39 PM by SidDithers
The dome would act like an upside-down sink, suspended over the leak(s). The oil collects in the dome, and is pumped out from the top. This stops the oil from reaching the surface where it spreads for miles and miles.

We use a similar device to catch leaks in our warehouse ceiling, it collects water and directs it through a hose to a storage container. It's a temporary measure until our damn landlord fixes our roof.

It's actually a sound idea. Whether it works in practice is an entirely different matter.

Sid

15. Might work, to capture the oil and continously pipe it to the surface and maybe into the systme
I believe the entire bottom of the Gulf in that area is criss-crossed with a network of underwater pipelines that feed back to shore. If a dome could capture the oil as it is releases and a pipe and sufficient pumping capacity attached at the surface it sounds like it might be something to consider.

17. Why on earth did BP not have a contigency plan for this?
They had to know the risks, but yet they never expected a worst case scenario. I guess profit margin is more important than the future existence of their business, because after this ordeal I hope BP is gone. I say we nationalize their company and make sure something like this never happens again.

22. That sounds like my idea for putting out oil fires.
When we had a lot of them. Big dome carried around by Chinooks. Drop it over the oil well fire. Snuff.
It could work for this too, if we had one. Pump out of the top. Need a big pump though.
I have no idea what refineries think about crude mixed with water, either. Probably not much.
Eh, we're screwed.

I know I don't

OK, Maybe you can approach from up wind.... I will give you that. It still seems dangerous to me.

Also what are the temperatures involved and what material is the dome made of?

Not trying to rain on your parade (sorry if I have) just trying to figure out how this might work.
