Parents accuse Springfield schools of civil rights violation
City Councilman Doug Burlison and his wife Mellony are asking the American Civil Liberties Union to help them stop the apparent practice of locking down Springfield schools to randomly search students for drugs.

If information about the searches that was conveyed to the ACLU is correct "the searches at Central High School and the District's policy of conducting such searches constitute outrageous violations of the Fourth Amendment rights of students and teachers who have been subjected to these searches," wrote ACLU attorney Doug Bonney in a letter he sent to Superintendent Norm Ridder Thursday.

If the district is unwilling to rectify the unconstitutional practices, the organization will consider litigation, the letter said.

The Burlisons' son, freshman Connor Mizer, said he felt his personal privacy was invaded by the school. "It's like an illegal search and seizure," he said.

1. Hundreds, if not thousands, of schools perform these searches.
They could all be wrong, I guess. But I'm not holding out much hope for little Connor.

They say he's a libertarian.

6. I have worked in many high schools and districts over the years
and have never heard of this kind of search being conducted. Lockers, yes but not personal belongings in a whole school.

7. Ours stand there while the kids walk by.
I don't really see it as any different. But I could be jaded by it now. We've done it for about 10 years or so.
