High school principal calls wishing Obama dead ‘funny’

A New Hampshire high school principal is insisting her membership in a Facebook group lamenting that Barack Obama lived through his first year in office is all a big misunderstanding.

"I do not wish our president dead in any way," Principal Ronna Cadarette told Concord Monitor.

More than a million people have joined the Facebook group, which features an illustration of the president equating him with iconography of the Soviet Union.

A photograph from the page is above right.

The name of the group is: "Dear Lord, This Year You Took My Favorite Actor, Patrick Swazie (sic). You Took My Favorite Actress Farah (sic) Fawcett. You Took My Favorite Singer, Michael Jackson. I Just Wanted to Let You Know, My Favorite President is Barack Obama. Amen."

"I find that funny; I don't find that offensive," Cadarette said. "It's a joke, off-color possibly, but a joke."

She removed her entire Facebook page, but is now crying foul, saying the public pressure forced her to give up her First Amendment rights. Ironically, she struck a nerve with teachers at her school last fall when she carried out orders from the superintendent to disallow the live broadcast of a speech by President Obama aimed at the nation's students.

According to Concord Monitor, English teacher Neal Byles went before the state Board of Education to argue that the district had infringed on his academic freedom and due process rights by barring him from showing the president's speech live to his students last fall.

His complaint was dismissed unanimously by the Board, which is headed by attorney John Lyons, who worked on John McCain's campaign. Byles is a registered Democrat, who is now using the Facebook incident to call attention to the political motivation behind refusing to allow students to see Obama's speech as it happened.

"This site shows that Dr. Cadarette has a clearly partisan agenda regarding President Obama, which makes her part in the censorship of him in our district highly suspect," Byles said.

Yet the principal insists her Facebook page has "zero association with me professionally."

Cadarette told the newspaper she took down her Facebook page in the face of heated criticism.

"Because of this experience and the unintended consequences of something that was a joke, I will now not exercise my First Amendment rights, and I will have no Facebook page," she said.

1. She should be fired for inappropriate behavior or whatever
Edited on Sat May-01-10 09:30 PM by MadMaddie
aggreement she made.

How can she be effective and insist that the students be respectful and not bully others on social media when she is doing the same thing.

Pathetic and totally unprofessional.

WTF did she think was going to happen. It's not a fucking joke!

Oh..another thought does she have minority students in this school? What are they supposed to think? Will they think that if they succeed beyond their wildest imagination that someone will wish them dead.

Damn...

4. I can think of 50 things I want to call her, and the DU P.C. Police would have an aneurysm over each
She should ABSOLUTELY be fired. How the school district can condone this...especially with teachers in disapproval...is beyond me.

Her sly little "fuck you" about waiving her first amendment rights by dropping her Facebook page isn't funny, either.

The First Amendment doesn't cover wishing the president dead, or inciting others to high-five her bullshit.

:grr:

6. No one is stopping her from exercising her First Amendment rights
but with those rights comes responsibilities and consequences. She can speak freely, but she's just paying the price for her poor judgment.

9. Does anyone in the United States actually understand what "freedom of speech" means?
It really seems to have taken on a warped and twisted connotation from both the left and the right.

The text:

"Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech..."

This does not guarantee one "immunity" from the consquences of their speech. It never has!

You're free to say whatever you like - that's guaranteed. I am likewise free to disagree with you, ridicule you, tell you you're stupid or just cross the street when I see you. Those might be the "consequences" of you expressing something boneheaded.

The government has not abridged Dr. Cadarette's freedom of speech in any way. The community she lives in decided her expression was outside of the community standards for her position and let her know.

The Bill Maher story for 2001 is the same thing. He said something unpopular. He was not prohibited from saying it, nor was he thrown in jail for having said it. But he lost his job because his employer didn't like what he said.

Consequences.

End of story.

15. I think it's within the bounds of acceptable humor because it's funny.
Maybe there's an issue with a school principal saying it, but would you object to a comedian saying it? Or the joke being emailed among a group of friends?

18. I just lost a facebook "friend" today.
She posted information on Congressman Tom Perriello, saying he'd missed something like 5% of votes, and saying we need to elect someone who is actually representing us.

I followed with a post saying that perhaps Mr. Perriello missed votes because "Teabaggers threatened his brother's family."

She responded that how dare I use a "term you wouldn't even use to describe homosexuals" (huh?) "just because people disagree with you."

I then reminded her that our former congressman, Virgil Goode, missed anywhere from 0% - 18% of votes, and that I called them "Teabaggers" because they have teabags hanging off of their hats (and look ridiculous) and wondered where they were over the last 10 years when our surplus was squandered.

Needless to say, Ms. Indignant is a member of, you guessed it, the facebook group mentioned here in the OP.

Oh, yes, how dare I call people "teabaggers." I should hope for their demise instead.

19. Not entirely the point
That the principal has every right to her "free speech" is indisputable. Even the political implications of the name of the group--despicable as they are--is only part of the story. There are two real issues: one, that it wasn't just that she and the superintendent made sure that no child was "forced" to watch the speech, it was that they allowed a small group of people to prevent everyone else's children from seeing it. That had never been done before at that school. The teacher showed every State of the Union President Bush delivered, as well as many of his other speeches and debates. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D) was invited to the groundbreaking of their new biomass furnace last March, a project that apparently received $3.5 million from the Reinvestment and Recovery acting. Hell, Bill Clinton came to that high school twice in 1992. So what's different about this president . . . hmmmm . . .

The second issue is the content of that site. There is some vile content there, which she tacitly advocated. Here are some of the more racist and sexist pages:

These are especially troubling, especially for an "educator" . . .
