NEW YORK (AP) — Pedestrians were barred from parts of New York City's Times Square as police closed streets to investigate a car that has been "deemed suspicious."

Police said Saturday the bomb squad was investigating the contents of the car on 45th Street. They say the block was closed between Seventh and Eighth avenues as a precaution.

Paul Bresson, head of the FBI's public affairs office at bureau headquarters in Washington, said agents are on the scene with the New York Police Department and that the matter is being taken seriously.

A senior Obama administration official said a Nissan Pathfinder was found with a suspicious package, but officials are not yet sure whether it was a bomb. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official wasn't authorized to speak on the matter.

The officer, who did not give his name because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said a man was seen fleeing the car and police had protectively evacuated several blocks around the popular tourist area in the center of Manhattan in case there were other devices.

The officer said law enforcement at the scene of the sports utility vehicle -- which was smoking and from which popping sounds were heard earlier -- were treating the vehicle as a "failed device."

Two female cops patrolling the area noticed a man fumbling with something in the back of a Nissan SUV parked on the southwest corner of 45th St. and Broadway about 7 p.m. The man saw the officers looking and took off running.

The two cops went to the car and saw smoke, clusters of canisters and heard something fizzing, a source said. The quick-acting cops called for backup, and the bomb squad was on the way as the Crossroads of the World was evacuated.

"It looks as if the perp was trying to light it up, and was interrupted by the cops, panicked and took off," a law enforcement source said.

"It looked like someone tried to detonate it and we got to it in time," another source said. "This is a big deal. It has the makings of a real car bomb."

The bomb squad used a robot to get inside the car and found gasoline, gun powder, propane tanks, electrical wiring and a possible detonating device with a clock attached, sources said.

Wires led from the device to the ground outside the car, and may have been connected somehow to the Marriott Marquis, a high-ranking police source said. The huge hotel was evacuated during the melee along with most Broadway shows.

Cops closed a huge chunk of Times Square from 43rd St. to 49th Sts. on Seventh Ave. and all of 45th St. from Seventh Ave. to Eighth Ave. Police were pulling video footage from a number of security cameras around the area.

Police said the blue Pathfinder appeared to be stolen and had bogus license plates. The man fumbling with the device vanished into the crowd and has not been found.
