I was once THIS CLOSE to a C-4 car bomb... the only reason why it failed, was not that it was amateur... but that when the bullet took the driver out... for some reason his finger did not press the dead man switch... and I remembered the DON'T USE A RADIO near this fucker.
The problem here is that many people in the US cannot believe we are sinking into this as a nation.
Oh and that one, took the bomb experts 23 hours to make it safe.

70. Try, Sir, To Keep Up.... |
|
'“It appears to be a car bomb left in a Pathfinder between Seventh and Eighth,” said Deputy Commissioner Paul J. Browne, the Police Department’s chief spokesman.
The device, he said, contained “explosive elements” that included “propane tanks, some kind of powder, gasoline and a timing device.”
“This is very much an active investigation,” he said.
The device was discovered by a mounted police officer who saw a box with smoke pouring from it in the back of the Pathfinder, Mr. Browne said. The officer called for backup, and the Fire Department and bomb squad.'
That is a description of an incendiary device, with a small amount of explosive 'oomph' to scatter the flammables out into a respectable pool of flame.

What the police spokesperson described is an incendiary device, loosely similar to a fougasse, which operates on the basic principle that a small propelling charge spreads a quantity of inflammables quickly to some distance from the device itself. This is pretty basic stuff....

106. Another account suggesting it was incendiary |
|
12:16 pm – WABC adds more details:
Sources told Eyewitness News that the vehicle contained gasoline, propane and possibly gun powder. Incindiary devices are not explosive devices, but are lethal.
According to ABC News, inside the Nissan Pathfinder police found: Three propane cylinders, two five gallon jerry cans of gasoline, a canister of powder, electrical components and an alarm clock.
Police at the scene said, “It’s the real deal.”
The distinction between an ‘incendiary device’ and an explosive is an important one in explaining how sophisticated this was. It makes it sound more like the act of a crank and less like the act of a dedicated terrorist cell with bomb training.

My comment is a fair distillate of what you attempted to press as a point: if you do not like the look of it when it is presented in sharp focus, do a better job of thinking through what you try and press next time..

If a political group towards which I have sympathies was the most likely suspect of a terrorism act I'd be flailing in denial-y anger too.
Well, maybe not. Maybe I'd assess the probabilities correctly and keep my trap shut. But then again, how many left-wing terrorism has there been in the last 20 years?

The location of an event to "make the statement" will usually be linked to a motive. I'm thinking more anti-society rather than anti-government.

68. Um... (just my opinion) but this looks more like a McVeigh copycat - that would be a terrorist act. |
|
The assumptions that "terror' = AQ or foreign seems a stretch to me...
This didn't detonate (if it is, in fact proven to be a bomb), that doesn't it shouldn't be taken as seriously.
If McVeigh's evil didn't succeed, would we have considered it an amateur failed rental-truck scare?
I just seems odd to me that the media (from what I can tell) is using the term "home-grown extremist" as also having a foreign/ME connotation.
Just reminds me a whole lot of the recent McVeigh documentary - but maybe my imagination is getting the better of me. **Including** how THAT act of terrorism was offered by the press with comments ME connections.
And to take my imagination/speculation further, I'm really way out there. : ) This was in front of the Lion King - (African... "king"... I know, I know, but this is what happens when there's a long void of actual, factual info).
During the WHCD Gibbs whispered something to the President and left? No wonder Obama didn't smile seem relaxed as much as he usually does for events like this one. It was visible. He'd stop smiling every time he checked his notes.
Obviously, I'm guessing on all of this....

87. I don't think McVey had a rental truck, nor does there seem to be any |
|
similarity to what he did.
That said, I recently read that he referred to the President by his middle name "Hussein" and questioned his citizenship months before he showed up near AF1 carrying a sidearm, having a rifle scope and the explanation that he wanted to "see Obama".
The story dies there, so I guess the event was deemed insignificant. I don't see it that way, but law enforcement knows a lot more than I do...
Maybe I'm too naive or have too active an imagination (well I know I have that) but I just see several similarities with what McVeigh did - in detail - than anything other incident I can think of. That said, this **could** turn out to be some odd set of circumstances and/or a possibly none-too-sharp person with no evil intent.
Given the issue of the tags, that makes me think that something about this was intentional, but that's just a guess, too.
Did you see the McVeigh documentary? If so, do you not see any similarities (however speculative)? I sure do, but that doesn't mean any of my views are absolute. : )

75. MSNBC still seems to be speculating possible terrorism primarily (at minimum) |
|
in terms of Middle East/Al Qaeda extremism, including when they say "home-grown"
They referred to the recent deaths of the 2 top leaders recently, the Najibullah Zazi trial - they keep mentioning these things, but I don't know why unless they have factual, official info of the connection. If so, they should say so.
They've also been talking of this in terms of being an IED, which many people might link immediately with who we're fighting in the ME.
... in the time I wrote this, I'm (thankfully) hearing other theories. Still, they've been really putting primary weight in they're own speculations on that one side a bit too much. We don't know, and (clearly) they don't know either...
Maybe I'm wrong, but does happen when I think.

114. Have you read Christopher Dickey's book "Securing the City"? |
|
It's a wonderful indepth description of the NYPD's anti-terrorism unit and its extraordinary work. These guys are so on the ball. They use all of the advantages that NYC has to recruit potential officers from new immigrants from ME countries and can speak the varied languages of the region. They have investigators sent to every city in the world hit by terrorists to gather info and keep up to date on terrorists tactics. If there is in AQ involvement, these guys will find it...I bet they're on the ball with domestic terrorism, too. They are a tough bunch in a tough city...
