Student foresaw Web-cam troubles

By John P. Martin

Inquirer Staff Writer

In hindsight, the e-mail looks eerily prophetic.

A high school student sent it to the Lower Merion School District's top technology administrator in 2008, weeks before the district began handing out laptops to students.

The teenager had done his homework, researching the software the district planned to load on every machine. He discovered the system would allow employees to remotely monitor students' laptops, and called it "appalling" that the district hadn't told anyone.

"I could see not informing parents and students of this fact causing a huge uproar," said the student's e-mail, which The Inquirer has reviewed.

In her reply, information systems director Virginia DiMedio told the student not to worry.

1. My, my, my!
But of course, someone will still defend the school district's right to do so.

4. When in a position of responsibility, you must act responsibly

or be ready to defend yourself against charges of indifference.

While the director Ms VD (well with those initials, on top of everything else her self-image may be challenged) feigned indifference, the reality seems to be that she dissuaded concern in order to maintain secracy on what she saw as an essential security feature.

This seems to be somewhat organic to IT systems administration. There seems to be a brand of institutional cybernaut whose security concerns will motivate their behavior towards extreme rationalizations void of common sense and reasonable consideration of their clients.

6. "I never thought"....
Edited on Sun May-02-10 07:25 AM by sendero
... this admin is a MORON. She "never thought" someone might turn on the camera without cause, or not turn it off. Her story is simply not credible.

"We didn't tell the kids about the cameras because we wanted to catch them".

Again, an idiotic statement. Had everyone known about the cameras there would have been a lot less loss to begin with.

This person was trying to play "gotcha" and now she is "got". She deserves the shitstorm that whirls around her.
