Pakistani Taliban claim credit for failed NYC Times Square car bombing

A top Pakistani Taliban commander took credit for yesterday's failed car bomb attack in New York City.

Qari Hussain Mehsud, the top bomb maker for the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan, said he takes "fully responsibility for the recent attack in the USA." Qari Hussain made the claim on an audiotape accompanied by images that was released on a YouTube website that calls itself the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan News Channel.

The tape has yet to be verified, but US intelligence officials contacted by The Long War Journal believe it is legitimate. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan News Channel on YouTube was created on April 30. Officials believe it was created to announce the Times Square attack, and Qari Hussain’s statement was pre-recorded.

I put a lot of stock in Roggio's reporting, we'll see I suppose.

1. Thankfully it didn't explode, but if this is what their "top bomb maker" takes ownership of, well...

3. If they suck that badly at bomb making why are we wasting billions over there?

4. If they were smart, they'd blame it on Wile E. Coyote.

5. They're not very good car bombers, are they?
If this actually is the Taliban or AQ you would have to wonder about the armature way this bomb was put together. Kind of sloppy for AQ, but then again, so was the shoe and underwear bombers.

7. Access to materials
In war-zones like Iraq and Afghanistan people have ready access to military and other high-explosives.

Send someone to America with nothing but a credit card to make a big bomb out of what he can buy at Home Depot and the success rate will go way down.

9. AQ had a pretty good sucess rate in London and Madrid a ways back.
But then, this group claims to be Taliban. Maybe they aren't talking with AQ?

6. You can probably bank this
I was leaning tea-had, not jihad, but I find this quite credible.

Rogue groups are forever claiming credit for stuff but AQ and Taliban-related folks do not, in my memory. And they take credit for their fuck-ups.

Yeah... assuming the linked article is accurate about the claim and the status of the claimant then I buy this.
