Chinese carmaker BYD to locate North American headquarters in L.A.
09:33, May 01, 2010

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced on Friday that Chinese manufacturer BYD Auto Company Limited (BYD) will locate its North American headquarters in Los Angeles.

BYD is the first major Chinese mass-production automobile company to set up a headquarters in the United States, the governor said.

"California's market-friendly energy and environmental policies are playing a vital role not only in making California more energy secure but also in bringing companies like BYD to our state," said Schwarzenegger.

"Like California, BYD is a company of firsts. They are leading China and the rest of the world into a cleaner, more sustainable future with their automobiles and renewable energy products while creating jobs and saving consumers money. I welcome BYD with open arms and look forward to growing California's relationship with China to mutually benefit the environment and economy."

1. When China starts exporting industry to the U.S. for
cheaper labor costs, you know we're in trouble.

3. It's most likely for prestige, market, and American novelty-seekers
The Chinese are ramping up their heavy industry. America has always been a prime testing ground for new technologies.

There are about 900,000,000 cars on this planet. I don't think we need more. I wish the Chinese -- and *US* -- would concentrate on better community planning to encourage public transportation. It's much more efficient, and non-sprawl communities are usually healthier.

6. Where does it say that they will build them here?
They probably will eventually, like Toyota and Honda.

Wouldn't that be strange when Walmart has to unionize in China but not the USA, and BYD does the same?

4. Build Your Dreams
with help from a Chinese company?

This is a strange world, but it does require help from all quarters.

5. China has a lock on rare-earth metals to make efficient electric motors
And it has one of the larger reserves of lithium for making batteries (after Bolivia and Chile).

So they should do very well in manufacturing electric cars.
