Poll question: Gallup has polled "Do you approve of marriage between blacks and whites?"
Edited on Sun May-02-10 02:07 PM by skipos
several times since 1958.

Here is my trivia question for you: what was the first year that a MAJORITY (over 50%) of Americans approved of marriage between balcks and whites?

Pick your honest answer. I'll post the answer and link to Gallup below.

1997

I think about this every time I read "A new poll finds that most Americans approve of gay marriage bans / the "Papers Please" law in AZ / or something else really stupid."

8. I knew it wasn't until the 1990's,
I erred in giving people the benefit of the doubt and guessed 1991.

19. That's not all "White Bigotry" though.
I think most minorities are against mixed marriages, especially when "successful" minorities wed whites.

21. Check out the link, Gallup polled whites, blacks & hispanics separately.
Whites have been by for the most disapproving of interracial marriage over the years.

12. My cousin married my cousin-in-law in the 70's.
Nobody talked about her huband but in hushed whispers.

Finally our mutual cousin showed me a photo of them together. She was 5'1" and he was 6'2" and African American. I smiled, couldn't believe THAT was a problem. So I asked my cousin, "Tell me Joel, is he Jewish?"

They're divorced now but I'm still in touch with both of them. He turned out to be nicer than a lot of folk in my family.

15. I've often wondered about this subject when the topic of gay marriage comes up
Back in the 90's I saw lots of interracial and intercultural couples walking around. I see a lot less of them now. I think we are becoming more isloated. Groups tend to stick with their own. Whether it is race, religion, politics, or just personalities. I think it is really sad that we have reverted back to voluntary segregation. My husband and I are very different. We definitely have different personalities. We agree on most politics but do disagree on some issues. We differ on religion. We differ on a lot of things but I think it is our differences that have made us stronger. We respect each other's right to be different and to be individuals. We allow each other to have different opinions(unheard of in today's society). We allow each other to have different music, hobbies. We even have different parenting styles. We don't let it get in the way of our relationship. I'm sad to say that even on this board I've noticed that people don't allow others to have different opinions. People get verbally attacked for having a different opinion. How can we expect our society to be diverse when we don't embrace diversity?

Just. End. It.

It's stupid, embarrassing, and shameful of Americans and I have NO compunction on calling my country out on it. The world may be dying and we worry about THIS stupid shit.

Idiot America.

24. I don't approve OR disapprove.
IMHO, it's none of anyone's fucking business.

If you fall in love with a man or a woman... black, white, brown or yellow it's not anyone's business but your own.

Saying that you "approve" of this gives you the power to approve or disapprove, which no one has.

Same goes for gay people, NOYFB. Last illustrated by the prop H8'ers here last election cycle.
