Piping Plovers.... awwww... what have we done?

Piping plovers, this one is just two days old, are shorebirds that nest on the ground on barrier islands and beaches. They feed on small invertebrates along the beach and thus are at risk if oil comes ashore or affects their food sources.

4. There aren't many, if any, plovers in the Gulf, now, with their breeding grounds...
further north, Minnesota being a favorite.

I'm part of a plover research group here on Long Island watching the local nesting grounds, and they're doing fairly well (with their buddies the Least Terns doing not too bad, either)

Biggest problems are cats and racoons huntng them, and people who love to fourwheel out on the beach, or otherwise trample their nests.

They will return to the Gulf in the fall, however, and there are plenty of other cute species down there now.

6. Oh, yeah! There's lots of them down there, and lots of beach. Biggest...
problem used to be the cats.

Here on the North Fork, beachfront habitat is a little iffy, and very crowded.
