Queen Elizabeth spent more time on active duty than Bush
This dawned on me when I was responding to another post and I decided to check the details. This says she was trained as a driver, but I believe she was also a mechanic. And, of course, while her parents did move their children to Windsor during the Blitz, she still faced more danger in England as a teenager than our esteemed leader ever did on the occassions he would actually show up for his Guard duty.

Perhaps she could use this to humiliate him.

Military career
In 1945, Princess Elizabeth convinced her father that she should be allowed to contribute directly to the war effort. She joined the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service, where she was known as No 230873 Second Subaltern Elizabeth Windsor, and was trained as a driver. This training was the first time she had been taught together with other students. It is said that she greatly enjoyed this and that this experience led her to send her own children to school rather than have them educated at home. She was the first, and so far only, female member of the royal family to actually serve in the armed forces. During the VE Day celebrations in London, she and her sister dressed in ordinary clothing and slipped into the crowd secretly to celebrate with everyone.

Bush and his band of Crooks would never, ever want to stoop to the leval of the common Peasant.

5. I was just thinking of the contrast between the Queen's parents
staying in Buckingham Castle during the blitz and Bush's hopscotching around the country on 9/11. I'm not a fan of the British Royal family, but I have to admit that they showed real class during World War II (even if they did have to stash the Duke of Windsor in the Bahamas for the duration!)

10. There's a reason the Queen Mother was so beloved.
She went thru it with them and they never forgot.

11. I always loved what the Queen Mother said about sending
the princesses to Canada during the blitz.

"The princesses won't leave without me. I won't leave without the King and the King will never leave." Take your best shot, Adolph.

12. My thoughts too, hedgehog
Although I've never been a fan of the monarchy and can't understand American nostalgia for it (I believe we fought a revolution against it back in the 18th century), I have to commend Queen Elizabeth and family for "walking the walk" when it comes to gestures of solidarity in a time of war. Far superior to our new King George and his elite retinue, who actually come closer to resembling Marie Antoinette and her court.

7. As I mentioned in another thread, she also went to the mat with
her father about this. During WWII, single women in Britain were required to register for national service. When she turned 18 in Apr 44, she told Dad she wanted to register and serve. Dad said that her role as heir presumptive was sufficient. She stood her ground and signed up.

14. She also didn't hesitate to allow her son to go off to war
Prince Andrew served in the Falklands. Her grandson Prince Harry is due to leave for Iraq shortly, as is her cousin's son.

Her husband also served with distinction in WWII. Her father saw active service in WWI.

15. I was wrong
I always viewed the British royals as a quaint anachronism, useful only for their entertainment value (who could forget Charles' wish to be a feminine hygiene product!).

I didn't know about Elizabeth's service in the war. That's the true definition of quality. Brava.

16. Charles spread the word on organics
http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2007/05/princecharles200705
Passionate about organic farming and sustainable development, curious about ways to improve the "built environment" with holistic communities designed from scratch, unafraid to condemn trends he abhors—genetically modified foods, for one, wind farms for another—he's what his American counterpart, Al Gore, calls a "thought leader."

"All my life," the prince said, "I have tried to break conventional molds because I think they are mistaken. The only way I could do it was through the duchy, to show there was an alternative way of looking at things."

Even hereditary royalty doesn't control MSM...

17. Funny story about that --
Her father came by to "inspect the troops" in her unit at one time, and she was to demonstrate the repairs she was doing on an automobile. Try as she might, she could not get it started. It was only later that she learned the King had managed to remove the distributor cap just moments before.

19. Queen Elizabeth II
A she really was a Princess too. Not like the Bush twins that behave like princesses.

And she is still working at 81, her grandson is going to Iran, her son went to The Falklands and
she is well educated on world affairs, she would never call someone by the wrong name or not know about a persons religion, work or country when she visits either.

She also spent more time on active duty than President Clinton, President Reagan, President Roosevelt, President Hoover or President Wilson. Whats your point.
