My right-wing relatives were saying stupid things like "Too bad they didn't shoot more," yet no one seems to mention that there was rioting, and an ROTC center had been set afire.

So both sides were wrong.

13. It is never ok to destroy property ...but....There is no comparison to the taking of human life.
Is it ok in your view to equate the two ????

16. No. I'm not equating the two.
I'm just saying that while the Guardsmen over-reacted, the crowd shouldn't have been rioting in the first place.

Protesting is one thing.

Rioting is another.

14. A few fire trucks equipped with high pressure hoses
and lots of water might have taken care of both problems with no casualties and perhaps few serious injuries.

Rioting and burning aren't right, but why should bullets be used against unarmed kids?

PS...I was 17 when it happened. :(

20. I just heard a news story from a radio reporter who was there at the time with a tape recorder
Edited on Mon May-03-10 05:52 AM by lib2DaBone
.. He said basically the same thing as a few of the above OP's... that the students were 'rioting' and had broken some windows downtown. (no telling if it was the same students standing on the grassy knoll as the ones who had broken the windows downtown?)

His take was , that it was "Too Bad" that four un-armed students had been shot.. but hey.. things happen".

Can you imagine if 4 students had shot 4 un-armed policemen? His dog-whistle statement was basically, "Hey.. these were dirty Hippies and deserved to be shot". Which, if you look at the photos of the dead bodies, you will see that they were mostly well dressed students and commuter college kids...

After I picked my jaw up off the floor..(I couldn't believe what I just heard), the insinuation that it's OK for the military to fire on unarmed students as punishment for breaking a window"?

The reporter said that a Lieutenant had fired his pistol in the air, so thinking an order had been given.. the rest of the troops opened fire, and that was "OK". "Just a small SNAFU".

The right-wing Conservative Christian mind baffles me.... and scares the hell out of me at the same time..

22. The "riot" was Friday night when bars got closed people were pissed
Shootings happened a couple days later.

I don't think there's anyway to know if the people who got shot participated in the earlier riot.
