A Sad Example on the Direction of This Country:
Democratic Senator Uninvited from Daughter's Graduation

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri) was scheduled to speak at her daughter’s graduation ceremony at a Catholic high school – but the invitation was rescinded over the senator’s positions on abortion and embryonic stem cell research, a major issue in her defeat of Sen. Jim Talent (R) last November. According to McCaskill’s office, the school told her the decision to uninvited her came from Raymond Burke, the archbishop of St. Louis.

Burke gained notoriety for his high profile denunciation of 2004 presidential candidate John Kerry, a Catholic, whom he warned to stay away from mass while campaigning in St. Louis – the archbishop threatened that he would withhold communion. More recently, Burke resigned as chairman of a children’s medical charity after its board of governors refused to cancel a fundraising concert by Sheryl Crow, whom he called “a high profile proponent of the destruction of innocent lives.” Burke’s political activism has made him a hero on the far Right.

Jesus F. Christ - it was her daughter's graduation, and I'm quite sure Sen. McCaskill was not going to use this opportunity to campaign for her positions on abortion and embryonic stem cell research. It was HER DAUGHTER'S GRADUATION.....family values my big fat sweet smelling ass. (not really, the big fat part I mean ;))

There seems to me to be an ever widening gap between right and left and more and more hostility and anger toward each other - are we heading down a path of no return? I hope not - everyone is entitled to their political views and I respect that, but some, like the "good man of the cloth" above, are using these differences as a weapon. I hope Sen. McCaskill will be allowed to attend.

1. I hope she will attend
and by her very presence make those who are intolerant uncomfortable.

That being said, kindly remember this is a Catholic high school, and I guess they can decide who to invite or disinvite. I can't figure out why they invited her to speak in the first place--she's been a figure in local Missouri politics for years, and its not like her views are unknown.

3. That's what gets me -

the (D) by her name may have implied her positions on such issues. This is not like the instance where BYU wanted Cheney out - this was her daughter and a parent who was probably involved and chose to send her to a Catholic school. I guess accepting her money to send her there may be considered a bit hypocritical as well.

5. What do you mean what happened to them? The heirarchy
of celibate male clergy is very political all the way to the Vatican. Nothing has changed since I was in Catholic school and had to be a practicing Catholic. That was forty years ago. Women are only allowed in the Church like in convents because they do the jobs the men don't want to do like running hospitals, parochial schools and doing the housekeeping for the clergy.

4. Consider the source. The Catholic MALE heirarchy is very
narrow minded, not in the least democratic and very patriarchal. They probably think they were kind in allowing her daughter to graduate at all. If they keep this up, they are going to end up with a religion of celibate men only.
