During the broadcast of the NASCAR race Saturday night, one announcer made SURE
to tell us they were in Richmond Virginia, the Confederate Capitol JUST as the race was rolling towards the start/finish line to begin.

What the fuck was his point? Alas, this was Fox Sports which broadcasts the races till june, but he sounded PROUD.

Jerk off.

I have been under the impression that there is some unwritten rule that Fox is not to be watched, because even if we watch non-news shows, it increases their viewership.

Considering the previous sentence, why must one assume that everyone knows about the capitol of the confederacy?

Perhaps the announcer was engaging in idle banter. And, the people who follow the rules re not watching Fox would not have heard it anyway.

The Fox broadcast crew ain't the best... I get tired of DW pretty fast. Larry MAC Reynolds is very astute, but he's a preacher's son from Alabama, and I find his speech annoying at best. You will not find a nicer, or smarter, guy in racing than (former psychology instructor)Dr.Dick Berggern.

I mean was this some shock to you. You talk about other people being naive, NASCAR has a huge tradition and following in the deep south. Many times these announcers give historical context to the city that they happen to be racing in. I really can't believe you are this outraged or are you just looking to be outraged.

Or whatever it is that he's speaking. I think DW starts off with a list of homespun homolies that he needs to work in to each broadcast - kinda like Ronnie Regan.

My all-time favorite NASCAR broadcasters were th old TNN crew - Mike Joy, Buddy Baker, and Neil Bonnet. Knowledgeable, matter-of fact, and the kind of guys I like to watch a race with.

"made SURE

to tell us they were in Richmond Virginia, the Confederate Capitol".

I am referring to the revisionists who try so desperately to glamourize that conflict, and the traiters and slavers who began it. The announcer referenced is one of those.

I am not referring to your "citizens of today". We don't often hear their comments on the Civil War, as it was, indeed, a very long time ago. They may well be proud of their city, as it exists today.

I object to those who, like the announcer, are only proud of it having been "the Confederate capitol". *They* wish only to renew a sad and sick conflict that was resolved so very long ago.

70. This is how it works
NASCAR is a traveling sport. Every city or track they go to the announcers try and draw some correlation into the history of the city, town, state etc. where they happen to be racing. When NASCAR travels to Michigan, you often here the announcers say something like this, "Well boys we are in the home where Ford and GM were built, could be a big day for one of those makers." Richmond Virginia was home to the Confederate capital. It is simply the truth. In fact one of the major tourist selling point;'s of Richmond is the historic grounds of the Confederate capital. Furthermore if you asked most people on DU what one thing springs to mind when you mention the name Richmond, a good many people would answer capital of the confederacy. Stating something that is obvious to most people doesn't mean that you agree with it or even like it. If that was the case most of DU would be in trouble.

I spent time there... in fact, I was there in the late 90's and walked from my hotel to the state Capitol area... walked around, soaked up the Summer sun and air... I even walked by the governor's mansion and believe it or not, saw a black suburban pull into the gate and watched Gov. Macaca and family enter the building.

And, as Lynne said, that was a long time ago.

I live in Downtown Richmond and love it. The people are the nicest of anyplace I've lived, and the history here is so rich. Excluding the Civil War.

Do they think backwards? I ask because the announcer seems to imply a pro-Confederate reference to the Confederate capital. Does backward thinking manifest in backwards car races?

The pride, if that's what it was, seems misplaced, as that side lost that war, I believe, and at least in the opinion of this north-if-the-Mason-Dixon-line pro-abolitionist, slavery was a brutal abandonment of human ethics.

You wonder what the scores and scores and scores of Afro-American NASCAR drivers think of such a reference, were there any to ask.

You were watching a pseudo-sport that got its start when backwoods southern bootleggers would soup up their cars to outrun police in order to transport their hillbilly poison -- a pseudo-sport steeped in the deepest, murkiest waters of racism, slavery and hatred for the Other -- and you are surprised at the announcer's celebration of the Confederacy?

It's like visiting a strip club and then complaining that the MC called the dancers "babes" or "honeys".

Do you have any idea where the drivers come from? Where the tracks are? That except for football, NASCAR gets higher ratings than virtually any other regular sports cast. And you still think it's limited to the South?

Assumption and lack of knowledge, something that runs rampant when it comes to NASCAR around here. Those of you who just hate everything motorsports related really need to realize how much of an industry it is, and if we followed your lead, millions more would be out of work because they don't work in the 'right' industry....

28. Being from Indiana . . .
. . . I have a hard time understanding the fascination with NASCAR's japoly racing in the first place. The cars are 50 miles per hour slower than the Indy Cars to begin with. The only reason NASCAR took off at all was because the cars have more advertising space, so cigarette companies bought into it as a way around the ban on cigarette commercials.

As to the "Capitol of the Old Confederacy" remark -- it figures! But consider the source: Fox! NASCAR was imbued with the Old South's racism and sexism from its inception. The solution -- in my opinion -- is to pay less attention to NASCAR. And certainly don't treat it as the pinnacle of American racing. As I have said for many years: "Real Race Cars don't have fenders!" I love auto-racing, but NASCAR turns me off!

But it is not supported in fact. One of the many reasons that Indy car racing has faded from it's former preeminence has to do with the (INSANE) cost of the cars - Unless you are racing for the lead, it is simply not worth risking a million-dollar car for a position.

53. FREEZE!
The IRL has been keeping the lid on costs more than any other major racing sanctioning body. That's why theystandardized the chassis, and keep the price of it around $250K. The multi-million dollar race cars are in Formula One -- because of the Constructors Association rules.

The reason Indy Car racing slumped a bit was because the big names all retired in the 1990s -- that is Foyt, Andretti, Unser, Mears, Rahal, etc. Moreover, as I indicated, NASCAR convinced Madison Avenue that their cars had more room for advertisement. Lastly, NASCAR put a lot of money into promoting drivers as publicity for the sanctioning body . . . something the others were slow to do.

But, I can tell you from first hand experience, that the Indianapolis 500 has been consistently more competitive than the NASCAR race at the Speedway -- NASCAR just puts on a 400 mile parade.

54. You mean the $650K Dallara
Plus the engine lease... The IRL car owners, fronted by Barry Green, are proposing a $250K, US built spec car, but it's not reality yet.
The rest of the 1st 2 paragraphs is pure speculation, and not supported by fact of any sort. Do you know how TV exposure is measured? Or how dedicated to "Corporate Entertainment" CART and IRL sponsorship packages became? The "hospitality" trailers were bigger than the race car transporters.....

74. Naah NASCAR is more popular for a couple reasons
The biggest reason is the casual fan. The casual fan will tune into a NASCAR race for one main reason, and that is to see a big, nasty wreck. Now of course there are wreck in the INDY series as well, but the wrecks are fewer and farther between and usually not as many cars involved. Though I have seen a few INDY 500's where the number of wrecked cars out numbered the cars still left in the field.

The other reason NASCAR is more popular is because it's bigger, more tracks more cities. Offers more money and incentive to drivers. Hence the reason Danica Patrick left the INDY racing sport and the stars in NASCAR are typically American born stars, whom people can find it more easy to relate to. In INDY the stars are usually foreign born and come from wealth. NASCAR has prided itself on being the sport of racing for the poor man. Most kids who grew up INDY racing had to have some serious money., not in all cases, but certainly in most cases. NASCAR has helped with incentive programs for young drivers by helping them finance quarter midget cars and learn how to race them and repair and build them. Something that the INDY sport has been lacking. This all makes NASCAR simply a little more popular from week to week. Though don't get me wrong I am a big INDY fan, and in my opinion the Indianapolis 500 trumps the Daytona 500 any year.

57. I wanna know why...
That so many "liberal", "Progressive" folks decry racisim in all its forms, but can't wait to pile on to a classist "NASCAR bashing" thread.

71. You don't fight ignorance with ignorance....
Or predujice with predujice. Several of the top drivers helped Wendell Scott out a lot behind the scenes - and he'll be in the Hall of Fame soon. Big Bill France did a number of things that were not in the best interest of the sport - might have had something to do with why prototypical redneck Lee Roy Yarborough punched him in the mouth at a Talladega driver's meeting. While you're trying to Google up arguments, look up Joie Ray, Charlie Christian, and Rajo Jack - and find out about some other guys who got raw deals, is spite of acceptance and respect by their fellow competitors.

59. "NASCAR's Darkest Chapter is its Racism" from The Charlotte Post
http://www.thecharlottepost.com/index.php?src=news&srctype=detail&category=Editorials&refno=1397

As we move toward Martin Luther King Day, Barack Obama’s inauguration and the Daytona 500, it’s an appropriate moment to consider the unusual life of another remarkable racial pioneer: NASCAR’s first black driver, the late Wendell Scott.

...

As the growing civil rights struggle in the ‘60s inflamed racial tensions, France reneged on his promise, and a pattern of unfair treatment by NASCAR followed. France denied Scott the rookie-of-the-year award for his first major-league season, even though Scott was the top rookie in the standings. When Scott won his only national race, NASCAR officials, fearing he’d kiss the white trophy queen, declared another driver the victor.

Long after the crowd and the queen had left, NASCAR grudgingly admitted that Scott had won.

For years South Carolina’s major track, Darlington Raceway, banned Scott because he was black. This cost him any chance for sponsorship. France addressed the problem with inaction and silence. When Scott finally asked for help, he said France told him that Darlington was important to NASCAR’s success and Scott should just be patient.

...

At one prestigious NASCAR event, Scott was exploited in a bogus promotional scheme. A record crowd packed Charlotte’s speedway after the promoter announced he’d give Scott his first chance to drive a competitive car. But the car was a phony; its weak performance embarrassed Scott in front of 81,000 spectators.

...

Many of the biased actions toward Scott took place as France was negotiating successfully with Wallace for millions of dollars in state subsidies for a huge new speedway at Talladega. Wallace never would have approved that money if NASCAR’s lone black driver had any chance of winning.
Today, more than 35 years after Scott’s last race, America’s racial situation has improved drastically. But NASCAR remains the country’s least diverse major sport, despite a diversity program launched eight years ago. Every regular driver in NASCAR’s three national series is still a white male.

Some of Scott’s admirers feel that some official recognition for him from NASCAR is long overdue – perhaps at the new hall of fame NASCAR is opening this year, perhaps even a public apology for the bigotry he suffered. Others believe an apology would be quite unlikely, since NASCAR, still owned by the France family, says it knows nothing about any unfair treatment of Scott.

69. Do you also torture yourself by watching Fox News
Expecting to hear kind words offered toward the President. I would not find it uncommon to hear a reference to Richmond Virginia being the capital of the confederacy at a NASCAR race in Richmond Virginia. The sport has heavy ties to the deep south. Does it also bother you that many reenactments of the civil war take place in Richmond annually. Boy what passes for outrage these days on DU.

Because it's not a game?

I suppose that you beleive yourself far too intelligent to take part in such a sport. I would suspect that quite the opposite is true....
