Deregulation's finest hour - Quayle's "Council on Competitiveness"
Former VP under Bush I John Danforth Quayle played a great role in the Republicans demolition of Federal regulations on business. He led a group called the
"Council on Competitiveness" which supposedly made US
businesses more competitive by removing those pesky regulations and safety standards put in place since the turn of the 20th century. Link is here:
http://articles.latimes.com/1992-06-24/local/me-697_1_competitiveness-council

We are all finding the consequences of this right now in mine and oil disasters, lack of food inspections and resultant diseases, bad working conditions even poor air and water quality...and look how "competitive" we have become - we sent all those jobs to China and India and Mexico, then blame the immigrants for taking them...

3. and his son's running for congress -- in arizona, of course.
Ben Quayle, Son of Mr. Potato Head, to Officially Announce Candidacy for Congress

"I want to go to Washington to stop the expansion of government into our everyday lives," Quayle says. "It's time for the next generation to start cleaning up the mess created by the establishment in Washington."

Quayle, 33, is a graduate of Vanderbilt University Law School.

Last month, it was reported that the younger Quayle has never voted in a local election.

"Like a lot of people my age, I haven't been involved in politics," Quayle told the Arizona Guardian. "I probably should have been more active, and that's my fault."

4. I'll bet that he's got a low handicap in golf.
His life handicap is being a Quayle.

Thought: Doesn't Arizona have a hunting season for "Quayle?"

5. It is EXACTLY the same "message" his dad used when he ran for office -
The "Mess" was made by the GOP and now they want to make even more mess to clean up the existing mess...
Amazing what people will believe.

6. His Democratic opponent needs to point out that it is because of lack of regulations
that we are now in the mess. And connect that back to his worthless daddy.

7. I am sincerely hoping tha ALL Democratic candidates will do this - it is truth,
this is exactly the situation the GOP has wanted for our country for decades - minimum regulation, no responmsibility, union membership down, many people competing for low wage jobs, housing impossible to afford for the working people.
This IS Republican America-just needs a bit more legalized racism and murder.

10. You might be interested in this Truman address in St Paul on Oct 13, 1948

Partial

Well, I have been studying the Republican Party for over 12 years at close hand in the Capital of the United States. And by this time, I have discovered where the Republicans stand on most of the major issues.

Since they won't tell you themselves, I am going to tell you.

They approve of the American farmer-but they are willing to help him go broke.

They stand four-square for the American home--but not for housing.

They are strong for labor--but they are stronger for restricting labor's rights.

They favor a minimum wage--the smaller the minimum the better.

They indorse educational opportunity for all--but they won't spend money for teachers or for schools.

They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine--for people who can afford them.

They approve of social security benefits-so much so that they took them away from almost a million people.

They believe in international trade--so much so that they crippled our reciprocal trade program, and killed our International Wheat Agreement.

They favor the admission of displaced persons--but only within shameful racial and religious limitations.

They consider electric power a great blessing-but only when the private power companies get their rake-off.

They say TVA is wonderful--but we ought never to try it again.

They condemn "cruelly high prices"--but fight to the death every effort to bring them down.

They think the American standard of living is a fine thing--so long as it doesn't spread to all the people.

And they admire the Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it.

Now, my friends, that is the Wall Street Republican way of life. But there is another way--there is another way--the Democratic way, the way of the Democratic Party.

Of course, the Democratic Party is not perfect. Nobody ever said it was. But the Democratic Party believes in the people. It believes in freedom and progress, and it is fighting for its beliefs right now.

In the Democratic Party, you won't find the kind of unity where everybody thinks what the boss tells him to think, and nothing else.

But you will find an overriding purpose to work for the good of mankind. And you will find a program--a concrete, realistic, and practical program that is worth believing in and fighting for.

Now, I call on all liberals and progressives to stand up and be counted for democracy in this great battle. I call on the old Farmer-Labor Party, the old Wisconsin Progressives, the Non-Partisan Leaguers, and the New Dealers to stand up and be counted in this fight.

This is one fight you must get in, and get in with every ounce of strength you have. After November 2d, it will be too late. It will do no good to change your mind on November 3d. The decision is right here and flow.

Against us we have the best propaganda campaign that money can buy.

But we are bound to win--and we are going to win, because we are right! I am here to tell you that in this fight, the people are with us.

With a Democratic President and a Democratic Congress, you will have the right kind of unity in this country.

We will be unified once more on the great program of social advance, which the Democratic Party pioneered in 1933.

We will be unified in support of farm cooperatives, rural electrification, and soil conservation.

We will be unified behind a housing program.

We will be unified on the question of the rights of labor and collective bargaining.

We will be unified for the expansion of social security, the improvement of our educational system, and the expansion of medical aid.

Moreover, we will be unified in our efforts to preserve our prosperity and to spread its benefits equally to all groups in the Nation.

Now, my friends, with such unity as this, we can secure the blessings of freedom for ourselves and our children.

With such unity as this, we can fulfill our God-given responsibility in leading the world to a lasting peace.

NOTE: The President spoke at 9:33 p.m. at the Municipal Auditorium in St. Paul. His opening words "Mr. Mayor" referred to Edward K. Delaney, Mayor of St. Paul. Later he referred to Mayor Hubert H. Humphrey of Minneapolis, Democratic candidate for Senator, Democratic candidate for Governor Charles L. Halstead, Senator Joseph H. Ball, and former Governor Floyd B. Olson, all of Minnesota; former Senator Robert M. LaFollette of Wisconsin; and former Senator George W. Norris of Nebraska.

The address was carried on a nationwide radio broadcast.

11. I included this in on the back of our Dinner Directory this past month.
The Indiana House Speaker brought it up in his remarks during the dinner. A blogger then posted it to the county's Democratic website.

14. People forget Truman - I believe he was one of our best Presidents -
The GOP certainly hated him which was a measure of his integrity. Truman NEVER let them get off easily and I'd love to see much more of his style today...

Thank you.

13. It's like saying if we eliminate laws people will be free to become much richer.
Edited on Mon May-03-10 11:48 AM by Kablooie
But it's only because the most unscrupulous will be able to take everything from everyone else.

Saying that companies will self regulate themselves because of economic presssures is the same as expecting people to self police themselves because of public pressure.
