1. Wow Mika Mouse and Joe Scum are actually
discussing this address - his comments on listening to other views.
Don't expect them to play excerpts from the section on 'government'.

2. I will be teaching college government this summer
This is my first assignment. This is my first draft, so your comments are appreciated.

Assignment 1: Politics, Government, & Me

President Obama recently delivered the commencement address at the University of Michigan. Among other things, his speech talked about the state of political discourse in America today and the role of government.

Listen to this address via the link and write a 3 – 5 page discussion & cogent analysis of the two points mentioned above, plus at least 2 other substantive points that were made about government or politics. Include brief quotations from the transcript of the speech. Your paper should address the following:

Your opinion. Do you agree? Why or why not? Support your opinion with examples from the news and/or personal experience.

Discuss at least 2 ways in which government has affected you personally – either positively or negatively. (These can, but don’t have to be used to support your opinion, above)

3. Excellent
The guy from Politico is discussing the 'government' part of the speech calling it a great speech that people should watch.

4. Yes, but the White House should carefully check the spelling on the transcript first.
I can't seem to get the video to play, so I'm reading the script, and at one point it says:

Since the days of our founding, American politics has never been a particularly nice business. It’s always been a little less gentile during times of great change.

I believe the word he must have actually said would be "genteel," not "gentile."

7. Anyone that can come away from watching/reading this speech
Edited on Mon May-03-10 09:25 AM by madokie
and not be proud of our President is beyond my understanding. After coming from eight years of listening to a bumbling fool read a few word that he couldn't pronounce nor know the meanings of, this is refreshing.
Thanks :hi:

Add: I'm proud of my 2 votes for this man to be my President. I expect no one to agree with me all the time, once in a while will be sufficient as long as he has our collective good at heart. We need to work hard to keep this democracy as it is worth keeping, warts and all.
