The fertilizer in the car seems like an homage to McVeigh. (It was non-explosivbe we're told. So if the attempted bomber knew that, . . . why else use? Of course, he or she could be so inept as to not know this.)

Did McVeigh leave car running, keys in? (NY botched bomber did.)

What set off the NY fireworks in the van but a long fuse (as McVeigh lit two fuses when he left the car).

Is the wanta-be bomber a wanta-be McVeigh as well??? I.e., arch-right wing, etc. Is that a valuable place to look?

3. Actually some will make him a hero
just like the the man who flew his airplane into the IRS building. There will be a lot of apologists making all kinds of excuses for the man because he's been victimized by the government and owes back taxes.

on the dumb-ass right wingers. They are NOT the totality of the problem. Power and greed are at the root of all EVIL.

10. Why do you consistently try to downplay the threat that some RWers pose?
Did you sleep through the OKC bombing and the Atlanta bombing? Did you miss all the RWers who came to townhall meetings last summer with guns? Do you not understand the violent history of racists in this country? Are you somehow not aware of abortion clinic bombings and the murder of an abortion provider recently?

You're the one who's stretching and I wonder why.

6. Fuck McVeigh. I am tired of hearing his name.

7. For the discovery of who it is. Attempted murder is attempted murder, after all.
Not to mention the significantloss of money and resources.

And if we pay him (or her) no mind, will he (or she) see the light and reform?

8. It turns out McVeigh locked his truck like attempted bomber, but
Edited on Mon May-03-10 08:41 AM by skip fox
didn't leave the keys in.

I have yet to find out about caution lights. The NY van had them on.

(Sounds like a sick joke on the part of a botched bomber.)

I guess the ferttilizer is the only signature parallel I have seen so far.

On edit: "The McVeigh Tapes" played on MSNBC on April 20th, less than two weeks ago.

9. On account has McVeigh leaving the keys in the Ryder Truck, locking it, and walking away.

Since the attempted bomber left the keys in the van and locked it, could he have taken his information from such sources when attempting to imitate his hero?

<snip>
On April 17, 1995, McVeigh rented a Ryder truck and then McVeigh and Nichols loaded the Ryder truck with approximately 5,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate fertilizer. On the morning of April 19th, McVeigh drove the Ryder truck to the Murrah Federal Building, lit the bomb's fuse, parked in front of the building, left the keys inside the truck and locked the door, then walked across the parking lot to an alley, then started to jog.

11. Summary
The botched NY City bombing shares a number of striking parallels with the Timothy McVeigh bombing beside the obvious vehicle-building-walk-away narrative (although that, in itself, is very compelling--replicating the act of one's hero in broad strokes). But there seem to be light strokes as well.

The botched bomber used fertilizer which the investigators say was non-explosive, placing it into a gun box. If he knew the fertilizer was useless, it would be a clear homage to McVeigh. (The gun box being a tip of the hat to McVeigh's military background.) If he didn't know this it could still be an homage.

The NY attempted bomber locked the van's doors, leaving the keys inside. Some accounts say McVeigh left the keys in the Ryder's cab and locked the doors. (I think the case is that he took the keys, but there is no accounting where these nuts get their information. Source: http://history1900s.about.com/cs/crimedisaster/p/okcitybombing.htm

Fireworks went off in the van alerting vendors. If the attempted bomber was so inept with clocks, it is likely that he lit a long fuse. McVeigh lit two fuses just before or as he left the Ryder.

Additionally,l MSNBC played a show based on The McVeigh Tapes on the 20th of April.

I could be way off, but if I was leading the investigation I'd be putting resources into this question, hoping to find him before . . .

12. Big difference -- McVeigh's bomb worked
That 5-10-5 fertilizer from the garden center doesn't work. You need the 33.5-0-0.
