Wally Schirra was a (gasp!) Republican.
One more hero shot down.

(snip)

Schirra was active in Colorado Republican politics. In 1972, he was master of ceremonies for a downtown Denver rally for then-Vice President Spiro Agnew. In 1979, he was an honorary chairman for Ronald Reagan's presidential campaign in Colorado.

3. John Glenn was an exception
Astronauts of that era tended to be conservative Republicans. They were military men to begin with, as a rule. They were also pilots and test pilots and had humongous egos. The GOP is a more comfortable home for that type.

8. He still has mine -- despite his politics, I totally respect

what he and the other astronauts did. Those guys had real guts.

It's not a black and white world. People whose politics I do not care for have done great things and I have no difficulty recognizing and respecting the value of their actions.

10. You can respect their personal accomplishments
