The one upside to the Gulf Oil Spill is
I am just going to love the fact that all those Red State Pols will be on bended knee asking Obama for assistance. Oh yeah... From Governor to Congress critter, Balfour and company bending down and begging Washington for money. For every Dollar that leads to a photo op with these "small government" advocates, I think they need a shot of Obama, Biden, or Napolitano should be shaking their hand at the ribbon cutting ceremony. I wonder how its going to sound like being a Teabagger beggin' to be suckling on the Big Federal Breast.

1. I have a feeling
... we will not see too much oil on shore.
Most of the oil is being mixed up with water well under the surface.

Given the geography of the gulf coast with hundreds of rivers emptying into the gulf, most of the polluted water will remain away from the coasts.

But the entire water column of the gulf will be polluted so much that it will become a dead-zone until it is flushed out of the gulf in a hundred years or so.

Only those deep sea creatures that can adapt to oil in their water will survive.

The damage to the coast lines may not be as bad as feared.

As I stated on another thread, the storms that have created so much havoc in the southeast will flood the deltas and give (at least) some resistance.IMO it's a catch-22. I realize people in TN,AR,VA,KY etc. are hurting. However, the runoff from those storms may be the saving of the gulf.

2. hoping that another upside will be that "drill baby drill" becomes "chill baby chill"
on offshore drilling--and even a renewed effort to develop alternatives like wind and solar ONCE AND FOR ALL.

3. Well...
...that just makes the impending devastation of marine wildlife acceptable.

:eyes:

Sometimes, you should let the filter between stupid thoughts and posting on the Innerwebs do its job.

5. heh
There are a great many people who don't give a shit about the marine life.

We have been telling them for years this is what would happen and we were ignored and derided. This situation is like being given lemons. Now we make lemonade.

If we can use this situation to lever those dumbasses from opening their stupid pie-holes ever again it will be good for the rest of the world.

....this situation very well might not ever be able to be fixed...then we're all fucked, regardless of politics.

12. I won't be silenced
I will yell and yell to try and make sure this doesn't happen again.

I yelled before, and no one would listen. Maybe they'll listen now?

7. There is no upside to this oil spill...
it's an unmitigated disaster, and any political benefit gained from it pales in comparison to the environmental destruction left in it's wake.

9. morally you are correct..
but, I can see the wind being taken out of the Teabaggers' sails. Maybe between the Arizona immigration fiasco (which also killed the birfer legislation in AZ) and this oil spill the Republicans in Congress are going to have to cooperate more and maybe Democratic losses in Congress will be lessened.

If we can corral the Republicans and Teabaggers a bit more, maybe we will get more environmental, safety and pro-union legislation through.

10. We knew it would happen, right?
The environmental mess will be great. Is already.

So... what are we going to do to keep it from happening again and again?

11. I don't care about political gain or loss
But I do have 5 cents that says 1/4 of this "spill" will not make landfall.
