but the fact of the matter is next year it could be Exxon, or Shell, or...
There's no big difference in what any of them are doing that merits singling one out. What we need to do is fight offshore drilling, and sooner than later - dump fossil fuels altogether.

3. Tried that after Valdez |
|
Refused to buy Exxon. After innumerable mergers, I lost track of who I wasn't suppose to buy gas from. It didn't work then, don't suspect it'll work this time.

8. you might want to check what the plastic in your PC |

is made from before you start complaining about responses ... you're using BP products right now unless you have somehow managed to create a PC from wood...

9. You mean that punishing a local station doesn't do anything for the bigger company since |
|
the gas they sell at one place doesn't necessarily come from that company? Glad to see you are understanding why the problem continues.

13. Even though oil is fungible... |
|
...the fact remains that there are BP gas stations. And those gas stations are a revenue source for the parent company. So boycotting them is reasonable IMO. Of course, the initial effect would hurt the small operators who run the gas stations, rather than BP. It would take a lot of people joining the boycott for it to be effective.
Now I have to say: if I hear the word "fungible" again I'm going to scream. Yes, we get it. Once the oil is in the processing stream, you can't really distinguish whose oil is whose. Okay, fine. That does not mean you cannot target a particular company, not at all. It's like saying money is fungible, therefore it doesn't matter if you get it from BofA vs. your local bank. After all, the ultimate source is the Fed // the US Mint -- so what's the difference?
Oil is fungible. Companies, however, have separate identities. If we want to organize a boycott against a company for some reason, then we target that company's outlets and/or products in whatever way we can. In this case, that would be their gas stations. Anything that is branded BP is something that will generate profits for the parent company.

...and it really wasn't directed at you, it's just I've been running across so many posts making the point that "oil is fungible" that I really do want to scream.
I always enjoy your posts BTW.

Then to Texaco for... I can't remember now.
Conoco seems to be the only one left I'm not boycotting. Give it time.

11. Where do you think costco gets gasoline from? |
|
Last time I checked I haven't ever seen a Costco rig.
All gasoline comes from the same place.

12. I'm pretty pro boycott but because of the global market and the way franchising works |
|
Edited on Mon May-03-10 03:07 PM by TheKentuckian
I don't think BP is open to attack on this front in a direct way.
I'd also bet that BP is just the first one to fail like this and the others are just a little more lucky for the moment.
I'm trying tot think of ways to use market forces to take BP to task but this is as simple as most industries. They have a model crafted to insulate them from accountability or even real competition.
On the surface it seems to attack one oil company you have to take them all on at once. Maybe BP has business associates that can be hurt that are in position to influence them.
