FYI--Nashville & over 1/2 of TN suffering HISTORIC flooding |
|
The NYC "bomb" & Gulf Oil Leak are overshadowing this, but TN is in trouble. Hope Obama will at least do a fly-over on his way back to DC from the Gulf. We need help in TN. Watch these videos & see for yourself. http://www.newschannel5.com/Global/category.asp?C=59819&nav=menu374_1

1. The NYC bomb is nothing. The Gulf spill is a really big deal. |
|
I'd like to believe this is a one-off for Tennessee but I don't think so. Your state is in trouble now, but the real trouble will be if nobody realizes this is going to happen again.

The Gulf is a big deal, I agree. NYC is more fear-mongering, IMHO. Ratcheted up by the likes of Beck & Bachmann.
There has been so much growth in Southern states in the last decade & many of the homes were built in flood planes. But this out does anything that this area has seen in over 100 yrs, since b/4 they kept weather records. Insurance rates will skyrocket. Global warming, anyone?

Luckily we are on top of a high hill.
I've heard it said they are not sure how many years they would have to go back to find anything comparable. Geologists will study this one for years to try & determine when this might have happened in history.

3. Nashville seems to get hit badly from time to time |
|
I've seen a few tornadoes rip through the city, including the one that hit downtown a few years back. I've seen ice storms that uprooted fifty year old trees. I've lived through the seven year cicada invasions.
The place is a mess, but I do love it there.
Good luck Nashville!

7. Just like the midwest floods oh what was it two years ago? |
|
It is a pattern, and we have the ignoring of... weather related issues.
That said the oil spill deserves the coverage it is getting. Tn deserves a lot more.

my stomach has been in knots for days.
Since the oldest is at MTSU I've been using dnj.com to try to keep up with what happens in Murfreesboro. They had a photo slide of 2 male students swimming in a campus parking lot off of Bell St. I just got off the phone with him, my son, and he said people were kayaking and canoing in it yesterday, but that the water is receding from the campus today. He mentioned that half of the university offices were closed today (I knew that a lot of the people that I met who work at MTSU live in Smyrna, LaVergne, Nashville, etc.) Today's exams are rescheduled for Friday...
This is going to be awful for quite a while.

creek that had been swept away. I saw roads washed out, etc.
We're fine here, just worried about a lot of fellow Tennesseans, how is it in Antioch....underwater? I was volunteering at school today and I mentioned the Gulf and what's happening in our state to the parent volunteer liasion. She mentioned that a friend in Nashville had e-mailed her Sat. stating that it looked bad. She got on her computer and her jaw dropped. She's been very busy and had a report to finish this afternoon, but she mentioned that she hadn't heard from her friend since. She's going to try to make contact.
My youngest read me the riot act last night as he thought that we should go to help out. I mentioned that we could not get anywhere as we don't own a boat, but that we might be able to go help out when the roads are passable...he didn't understand how bad it is.
I hope that your oldest will be okay, you don't need additional stress.

Hotel the last week of July. That hotel now has six feet of water in the lobby, and the owners have closed it for the indefinite future. They estimate the repairs will take several months.
Obviously, everyone's insured, but I am so sorry for the people of Tennessee right now.

Things are not over yet. TVA & the Corp of Engineers are having to release water from their dams to aleviate the backed up water so the dams don't burst. This means MORE water will be flowing into the Nashville area from these dams & causing water to rise even more here. :-(

15. It was reported that Fed funds were requested Saturday. |
|
We have not heard that those have been granted. Perhaps they have & I haven't heard on our news. Gov. has called our local Nat. Guard out to help in the effort. My point is that from the air Obama would have a very good view of the massive devestation this flooding has caused (Memphis to Nashville) & might spurn immediate action on our behalf. BTW, our Gov is a Dem.

from a fellow TN. :grouphug: :hi:
I live in one of the suburbs that was spared, but some of my relatives live in one of the hard hit areas. They are fine. They did not have water in their condo. They have power, but no phone service.
Middle TN is a mess right now. It is very sad. Glad that Obama is going to give us some disaster aid (maybe pay a visit?).
More prayers go out to everyone during this rough period.

water right at my doorstep, Saturday morning. The subdivision, north of memphis that I live in, was flooded bad but not as bad as some of the people in middle TN and Nashville. Memphis had one fire truck that tried to make it down a road that was overcome by water and ended up on it's side. I've heard quotes of the city of Memphis losing 3 emergency vehicles and about 20 police cars.
Millington, which is just north of where I live, was flooded pretty bad. We saw them pulling people out of the second floors of town homes by boat. We've had martial law implemented in certain areas and the police had issued a curfew of 7 p.m.
I've seen alot of news casting in the past 2 days to show me that it's pretty bad from Nashville all the way back to eastern Arkansas. I personally have never seen any kind of flooding like this in the Memphis area in my young 41 years of life.
I'm just hoping and praying that you and your's are safe and that a comforting hand will be laid on the families that lost loved ones in all of this.

22. May we all emerge from this disaster a little bit kinder and wiser. |
|
Hoping you are safe now, too.
This is monumental. TN won't forget this for many years. Saw on the news tonight that many governmental offices are flooded & they hope that documents can be dried out w/o losing any information. When the state capital is flooded this badly, it will likely have some unfortunate outcomes even for those who are presently untouched by the water.
Bring on the Sun!
