My immediate prediction is that there will be new very tight restrictions placed on how a vehicle can be sold. More paperwork, more regulation. Not unlike removing shoes at the airport. Just watch.

3. Elaborate?
You mean I'm being silly? If so, no, I'm being serious. Rick Sanchez had his panties in a wad because someone was able to buy a car on CL and no governmental agencies had been aware of the sale yet. He suggested that this was not right, that there ought to be more oversight of the process.

My understanding is that the new owner has a certain time period to register the vehicle in their name, and that the prior owner can also file some sort of change of ownership papers.

But I bet the process becomes MUCH MORE complicated after this, to discourage such private sales, so that used car lots are used as intermediaries more.

8. It is silliness..
...cars have been sold like this for decades...just without Craigs List.

I sold my last two cars to complete strangers for cash. I have bought three in the same fashion.

However, I will agree that some busybody knee jerker will TRY to make this an issue...but it will be shot down. Rick Sanchez is a moron.

CBS News: Breaking News Alert May 3, 2010

how convenient that the alleged buyer is allegedly from groups that are most pilloried by the racist Tea Baggers, so they can keep whining about terrists & illegals.

I know that fits my hypothesis that the failed bomber is a Timothy McVeigh copy-cat (not a Tea Bagger, at least not a "normal" one), but it's also a fact.

Thats what I think too.

Do you remember there was white supremacist a guy up in Camdon, who had the makings for a dirty bomb?

He was offed by his own wife who had had enough of his abuse.
She may have saved a city.

6. As one who needs to sell a car ( or trade-in and lose mucho $$)
this is an issue that has been plaguing me lately. I know a bit off subject, but I no longer feel safe selling a car myself. It isnt't just the concern over making sure I'm not ripped off as I know the drill of going to their bank or a cash only sell, taking someone with me if possible... But frankly, I'm concerned about the rare chance I'll get some crook (or worse) show up on my doorstep.

How do DUers get rid of their used cars if you don't trade them in? If you don't have a partner, would you try to sell it by yourself? (No, I don't have a handgun and I'm not going to get one).

9. Only sold one car to a buyer
And that was because my father had bought a brand new Saturn and died a little over a month later. I couldn't get back from a dealer what I wanted for it. It was no fun meeting buyers not knowing who they were being a single female. I do have a gun and you can believe it went with me. Especially since I ended up selling it to a guy 40 miles from me. I got his references but still he had to drive me home so I was glad to have the firearm with me.

Being female and single I prefer to just trade my vehicles in.

20. My issues exactly...
I've lived in several cities where lone real estate agents (both male and female) were murdered, so the reality is you just don't know who will answer an ad.

11. If you live in the Denver metro area, donate it to KGNU!
Edited on Mon May-03-10 04:32 PM by kgnu_fan
Donate Your Old Car to Support KGNU (www.kgnu.org)

KGNU has two options for car donations:

1) Vehicles For Charities: 303-308-2400 or 866-628-2277 (toll free within Colorado)

2) Cars Helping Charities: 303-423-2277 or 866-701-2277.

Both organizations are non-profits who facilitate the sale of your car, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting KGNU. The entire sale of the car is tax deductible to you, to the extent of the law.

They will take cars that run or not.
Some restrictions do apply.
They will tow any cars that do not run, with no additional charge to you.
You must be able to provide the title to the car.
For more info contact Shawna Sprowls at 303-449-4885.

But, that is just not a reality for me, at all. But, yes, I know that Dumb Friend's League, CO Public Radio, one of the charities for the blind and many others are options. Maybe one day....

13. Consider meeting at your mechanic.
You get a two-fer that way, the buyer gets to hear all about the car and you're surrounded by people with wrenches who regularly cash your checks. ;)

16. What's NY law on owner responsibility?
In Texas, if your name is still on the title, you are responsible, unless you've reported it stolen.

They won't touch private vehicles sales 'cause it'd have an impact on all used vehicle sales. The used care industry is BIG business with powerful state level lobbyist.

However, on a slightly different note. Where I live you can file a paper releasing you from all liability on any vehicle you sell after you've completed the transaction. It's always a really good idea to file such a form if your state offers it. It helps keep you from having to deal with the Feds in situations such as this.

I sure hope that person can prove they've sold the vehicle. A posting on craigslist doesn't prove a damn thing to me. It could be a really stupid attempt at a cover up for all I know.
